  • ChatGPT will offer personalised health insights based on a user’s data.
  • OpenAI says users ask over 300 million health-related questions every week.
  • The company claims its latest health-focused AI model performs better than previous versions.

OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Health in the US, allowing users to receive personalised health-related responses by securely connecting Apple Health and supported medical records. While the feature marks one of the company’s biggest healthcare pushes yet, it also raises an important question: Can users trust an AI chatbot with sensitive medical information?

The feature is now available to all logged-in users aged 18 and above in the US on the web and iOS.

ChatGPT now understands your health data

Unlike the regular ChatGPT experience, ChatGPT Health can provide contextual responses using information from Apple Health and supported healthcare providers, including One Medical and Function Health.

Once users connect their accounts, ChatGPT can access information such as medications, lab reports, recent doctor visits, sleep activity and other health metrics. It then combines that data with user prompts to generate personalised recommendations.

For example, ChatGPT can suggest restaurants based on dietary restrictions, recommend low-impact activities after an injury or help users understand lab reports before meeting a doctor.

Users can also browse their synced health records, monitor trends and continue previous health conversations within the dedicated workspace.

OpenAI says AI is becoming a health assistant

According to OpenAI, users ask ChatGPT more than 300 million health-related questions every week.

The company says people increasingly rely on the chatbot to understand medical reports, prepare for doctor appointments, interpret complex medical terminology and build healthier daily routines.

OpenAI also highlighted the performance of its latest GPT-5.6 Sol AI model, which scored highly on HealthBench Professional, a benchmark that evaluates AI models on medical accuracy, communication, safety, completeness and context awareness.

But should you trust ChatGPT with your health?

The launch reflects growing confidence in AI’s ability to support healthcare. However, it also brings privacy, security and reliability concerns into focus.

Medical records contain some of the most sensitive personal information. While OpenAI says health data is connected securely, users should still understand what information they are sharing and review the platform’s privacy settings before linking their accounts.

More importantly, ChatGPT should not replace professional medical advice.

Although the AI can help explain medical terms, organise information and provide general guidance, it cannot perform physical examinations, order diagnostic tests or fully understand an individual’s medical history like a qualified healthcare professional.

AI-generated responses may also contain inaccuracies or lack important context, particularly in complex or emergency situations.

The bigger picture

ChatGPT Health signals OpenAI’s ambition to become more than just a conversational AI platform. By integrating directly with health records and wearable data, the company is positioning ChatGPT as a digital health companion that can assist users in their everyday wellness journey.

However, trust will determine whether people embrace the technology.

For many users, AI can become a valuable tool for understanding health information and asking better questions during doctor visits. But it should complement healthcare professionals—not replace them.

As AI continues to enter healthcare, responsible use, strong privacy protections and human oversight will remain just as important as technological innovation.
