OpenAI is taking ChatGPT into a new phase by shifting its attention from individual users to entire households. The company is hiring a product manager focused on families, caregivers, and older adults, signaling that ChatGPT is evolving into an AI assistant designed for shared family use rather than just personal productivity.

The hiring comes as ChatGPT attracts a broader audience across different age groups. Industry data suggests more parents and older adults are adopting generative AI, while conversations around AI safety, parental supervision, and child-friendly experiences continue to intensify.

Why is OpenAI building ChatGPT for families?

OpenAI has listed a new product management role in San Francisco focused on creating experiences for families, caregivers, and older adults across its products. The position specifically seeks someone with experience designing products for parents, families, and trust-sensitive consumer services.

Although OpenAI has not officially commented on the hiring, the role offers a clear glimpse into where the company believes consumer AI is heading.

For years, ChatGPT has primarily been viewed as a personal productivity tool that helps users write emails, summarize documents, answer questions, and generate ideas. However, the company now appears to be preparing for a future where multiple family members rely on AI for different needs.

That shift could include personalized experiences for children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers, each with different levels of access, safety protections, and AI capabilities.

ChatGPT users are getting older

The timing of this hiring aligns with changing user demographics.

According to Sensor Tower estimates shared with TechCrunch, users aged 35 years and older accounted for 31% of ChatGPT’s global audience during the second quarter of 2026. That figure stood at 26% a year earlier.

Meanwhile, users aged 18 to 24 declined from 34% to 29% during the same period.

The trend is even more noticeable among parents in the United States. Nearly one in four parents using smartphones reportedly used ChatGPT during the quarter, compared with just 16% a year ago.

These figures indicate that generative AI is gradually moving beyond students and early adopters into mainstream households.

What does this mean for families?

Industry experts believe this hiring reflects a much larger transition.

Rather than acting only as an assistant for work or education, AI is increasingly becoming part of everyday family life. Parents may use it for planning schedules or helping with homework. Children may interact with AI for learning. Older adults could rely on it for reminders, health information, or daily assistance.

Technology analyst Ben Bajarin told TechCrunch that OpenAI is following a path similar to major technology companies like Google, Apple, and Meta, whose products eventually became deeply integrated into family life.

However, AI presents a different challenge because users are interacting with an intelligent assistant instead of simply consuming content.

That raises new questions around trust, privacy, shared memories, and responsible AI behavior.

Why is AI safety becoming more important?

The family-focused hiring also arrives during growing scrutiny over AI safety for younger users.

Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, believes AI designed for children requires stronger safeguards than products originally created for adults.

Recent research published by the institute found a significant gap between what parents believe and how often children actually use generative AI. While 27% of U.S. parents said their children had used generative AI during the previous week, 38% of children reported using these tools themselves.

The findings suggest many parents may not fully understand how frequently AI has entered their children’s daily routines.

Experts argue that future AI systems should include stronger parental oversight, age-appropriate content filtering, transparent AI disclosures, and better protections for younger users.

OpenAI has already introduced new safety features

OpenAI has gradually strengthened ChatGPT’s safety measures over the past year.

The company has introduced parental controls for teen accounts and improved how ChatGPT responds to conversations involving emotional distress by routing them to specialized reasoning models.

More recently, OpenAI also launched an optional Trusted Contact feature that can notify a family member or caregiver during potential self-harm situations. These updates come as the company faces legal challenges from parents alleging that ChatGPT contributed to harm involving their children.

Although those cases remain under legal review, they have intensified discussions around responsible AI development and user protection.

How does ChatGPT compare with Gemini, Claude, and Copilot?

ChatGPT is not the only AI assistant attracting older users. Sensor Tower estimates show users aged 25 to 34 account for around 40% of the audiences for ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.

Microsoft Copilot, however, has the oldest audience profile, with about 20% of its users aged 45 and above. Among U.S. parents, Gemini currently reaches the largest audience at 32%, followed by ChatGPT at 24%. Claude and Copilot trail significantly behind.

Even so, ChatGPT appears to be adding older users faster than competing AI platforms, suggesting OpenAI’s broader consumer strategy is gaining momentum.
