Gemini is taking a major step beyond chatbot capabilities. Google has launched Gemini Spark in India, introducing its first always-on personal AI agent that can perform tasks across Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and other connected apps. Powered by the Gemini 3.6 Flash model, the new AI assistant is designed to automate routine digital work while operating in the background, even when users are away from their devices.

The rollout will begin over the next few weeks for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in India.

What is Google Gemini Spark?

Gemini Spark is Google’s new agentic AI assistant built to handle tasks instead of simply answering prompts. Unlike a traditional chatbot, Spark can continue working in the background after receiving instructions, allowing users to focus on other activities.

Google first introduced the AI agent during Google I/O 2026. At launch in India, it now runs on the newer Gemini 3.6 Flash model, replacing the earlier Gemini 3.5 version showcased during the developer conference.

The company says users can connect Spark to Google Workspace applications without going through a complicated setup process.

How does Gemini Spark work?

Once connected, Gemini Spark can complete assigned tasks across Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and supported third-party services.

Google says the AI agent continues working even if a user’s phone is locked, the laptop is shut down, or the user is asleep. However, users remain in control by deciding which apps Spark can access and by turning the feature on or off whenever they choose.

For sensitive actions, such as sending an email or spending money, Gemini Spark asks for user approval before completing the task.

What tasks can Gemini Spark automate?

Google says Gemini Spark is designed to eliminate repetitive digital chores.

For example, the AI agent can automatically organize travel plans by adding flight and hotel information to an itinerary once bookings are confirmed. It can also search for local events based on a user’s interests and compile the information into a Google Doc.

Spark can retrieve information from connected third-party apps, summarize meeting notes, organize important emails, and notify users about selected topics without requiring constant manual input.

These capabilities move Gemini beyond conversational AI into what Google describes as an always-available personal assistant.

Why is Google focusing on agentic AI?

The launch reflects Google’s broader push toward agentic artificial intelligence, where AI systems do more than generate content. Instead, they understand goals, execute tasks, and complete workflows with minimal user involvement.

Competition in this category has intensified as technology companies race to build AI assistants capable of handling everyday work across multiple apps and services. Google’s strategy integrates these capabilities directly into Workspace, allowing existing users to benefit without adopting an entirely new platform.

Initially, Gemini Spark will be available to paid Google AI subscribers, giving early access to users who rely heavily on Google’s productivity ecosystem.

With its ability to automate emails, documents, travel planning, and other repetitive workflows, Gemini is evolving from a conversational assistant into a full-fledged AI agent designed to work alongside users throughout the day.
