WhatsApp Web is getting one of its biggest calling upgrades yet. Users can now make one-on-one and group audio and video calls directly from their browser without downloading the desktop application. Alongside this, WhatsApp is introducing QuickHD video, noise suppression, call transfers, and waiting rooms to make online conversations smoother and more flexible.
The latest update brings the web version much closer to the experience already available on WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop apps. The rollout has started gradually and will reach more users over the coming weeks.
What is changing in WhatsApp Web?
The biggest addition is native support for voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web. Until now, users had to install the desktop application to access these features on a computer. With this update, calls can now be placed directly from a supported web browser.
WhatsApp says both individual and group calls remain end-to-end encrypted. There are no additional charges for using the feature beyond a user’s internet connection, and the company has not introduced any time limits for calls.
The update also includes a dedicated Calls tab on WhatsApp Web. It gives users quick access to recent call history and favorite contacts, making it easier to start conversations without switching devices.
How do QuickHD and noise suppression improve calls?
WhatsApp is also focusing on call quality. The new QuickHD feature delivers HD-quality video within the first few seconds of a call instead of gradually increasing video quality after the connection stabilizes. This could reduce blurry openings and improve the overall video calling experience.
Another important addition is noise suppression. The feature filters background sounds to make voices clearer during calls. Whether someone is working from a café, commuting, or sitting in a busy office, the update aims to improve audio clarity without requiring external software.
What are call transfers and waiting rooms?
One of the most practical additions is Call Transfer. It allows users to move an active group call between devices without disconnecting.
For example, a group call started on a smartphone while traveling can be transferred to WhatsApp Web after reaching home. Similarly, users can switch the same conversation back to their mobile device when leaving their computer.
WhatsApp is also introducing Waiting Rooms for group calls. When creating a call link, hosts can enable a “Require approval to join” option. Anyone joining through that link enters a virtual waiting room until the organizer approves their request. This gives hosts greater control over who joins meetings and group conversations.
What other features are included?
Web users are also gaining access to features already available on other WhatsApp platforms. These include screen sharing during calls and emoji reactions that allow participants to respond without interrupting the conversation.
Together, these additions make WhatsApp Web a more capable communication platform for work meetings, virtual classes, family gatherings, and everyday conversations.
WhatsApp says the rollout has already begun and will expand to all eligible users in phases. As the update reaches more accounts, WhatsApp is positioning its web platform as a complete cross-device communication experience rather than simply a companion to the mobile app.
