News in Short

  • Instagram Edits for Mac brings multi-track video editing, keyframes and professional colour grading to Apple silicon computers.
  • The desktop app supports video exports up to 4K resolution without watermarks.
  • Creators can use custom fonts, multilingual auto-captions, licensed audio and saved mobile assets.
  • Edits for Mac is free to download but currently requires an M1 Mac or newer. There is no Windows version yet.

Instagram has brought its Edits video creation app to Mac, giving creators a more capable desktop workspace. The new macOS app adds a multi-track timeline, keyframe controls, colour grading tools and support for custom fonts. It also lets users export videos in resolutions of up to 4K without watermarks.

The launch expands Edits beyond smartphones as creators increasingly work with longer and more complex video projects. Instagram says the app has crossed 50 million users, just over a year after its mobile debut. The desktop version aims to make detailed editing easier through a larger display, keyboard shortcuts and mouse controls.

Instagram Edits for Mac adds multi-track editing tools

The central addition is a multi-track timeline that gives users more control over clips, audio and transitions. Creators can use keyframes to adjust elements over time. Visual audio waveforms also help them align edits with music beats.

Instagram has added a broader set of colour tools for more detailed finishing. These include colour wheels, tone curves, log conversions and support for user-imported Look-Up Tables (LUTs). Users can also customise keyboard shortcuts or import familiar mappings from other video editing applications.

The app supports custom fonts and automated captions in multiple languages. Instagram has not stated a limit for caption generation. Creators can also access the platform’s licensed and royalty-free audio libraries. Assets and text styles saved in the mobile app sync with the desktop workspace.

AI agents, direct publishing and 4K exports

Edits for Mac also supports connections with AI agents through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This could help creators bring agent-assisted tasks into their editing workflows. Instagram has not detailed every supported agent or the full range of actions they can perform.

Creators can publish videos directly from the editor without switching to the Instagram app. The publishing workflow supports account tags and location tags. It also includes Trial Reels, which let creators test content with a wider audience before sharing it with everyone.

Edits supports both vertical and horizontal video formats. Users can export finished videos at up to 4K resolution, without a watermark. This gives creators more flexibility when preparing content for different platforms and screen formats.

Edits for Mac availability and system requirements

Instagram is offering Edits for Mac as a free download through the official Edits website. The app currently works only on macOS and requires a Mac with Apple silicon. Supported systems start with the M1 chip.

There is no Windows version at launch. Users must sign in with an Instagram account to sync projects and publish videos directly to the platform. The Mac release gives creators another option beyond mobile editing, although its hardware requirement rules out older Intel-based Macs.

With multi-track editing, advanced colour controls and direct publishing in one free app, Instagram is making a stronger play for desktop creators. Its appeal will depend on how well the workflow handles demanding projects and how quickly the company expands platform support.
