The premium performance smartphone segment is heating up, and two of the latest contenders are the Motorola Edge 70 Max and the iQOO 15R. Both phones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset and target users who prioritise gaming, performance and long battery life. However, they approach the segment differently. Motorola aims to offer a more premium all-round flagship experience, while iQOO sticks to its gaming-first formula with a bigger battery and aggressive pricing.
Priced at Rs 54,999, the Motorola Edge 70 Max sits Rs 10,000 above the iQOO 15R, which starts at Rs 44,999. So, does Motorola justify the premium, or does the iQOO 15R remain the better value? Here’s a detailed comparison.
Design: Motorola looks more premium
Both smartphones avoid flashy gaming aesthetics, making them suitable for users who want performance without drawing attention. The Motorola Edge 70 Max features a glass back with a textured finish and an aluminium frame, giving it a flagship-like appearance. Our Aqua Grey review unit looked understated yet elegant. The flat frame also improves grip during gaming.
The iQOO 15R follows a similar minimalist approach with its Dark Knight finish and glass construction. While it feels solid, it lacks the premium aluminium frame that Motorola offers. It is also slightly lighter, making it easier to handle during everyday use.
Motorola also includes a programmable AI Key, while the iQOO 15R sticks to conventional button placement. Both phones feature IP68 and IP69 ratings for water and dust resistance, but Motorola goes one step further with MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability.

Display: Motorola delivers the sharper panel
The Motorola Edge 70 Max features a 6.8-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a QHD+ (2K) resolution, adaptive 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and a claimed peak brightness of 7,000 nits. It is one of the sharpest displays in this price segment and particularly benefits users who spend long hours reading or watching high-resolution content.
The iQOO 15R offers a 1.5K AMOLED panel with the same 144Hz refresh rate but focuses more on gaming. It supports an impressive 3200Hz instant touch sampling rate, 5000 nits local peak brightness and 4320Hz PWM dimming, making it excellent for fast-paced gameplay and comfortable night-time viewing.
In real-world use, both displays are excellent. However, Motorola’s higher resolution gives it an edge in sharpness, while iQOO performs better under direct sunlight thanks to its superior brightness optimisation.

Software and AI: iQOO takes the lead
The Motorola Edge 70 Max runs Android 16-based Hello UI. The interface remains close to stock Android with fluid animations and useful customisation options. Motorola also introduces Qira AI, which brings together features like Chat Mode, Creator Zone, Next Move, Pay Attention and Catch Me Up under one platform. However, the biggest drawback is that these AI features are currently limited to the 12GB variant, while the 8GB model will receive them later through an update.
The iQOO 15R ships with Android 16-based OriginOS 6 and offers a richer AI experience straight out of the box. AI Creation, AI Captions, AI Erase, AI Magic Move, AI Image Expander and AI Reflection Erase provide meaningful additions for both productivity and photography. The software also feels polished and responsive.
Motorola also promises only three years of Android updates, compared to four years offered by iQOO.

Both phones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, making performance a major highlight. The Motorola review unit came with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, while the iQOO 15R review unit featured 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.

On paper, iQOO posts a slightly higher GPU and AnTuTu score, while Motorola leads in Geekbench CPU performance. In reality, the differences are negligible. Everyday usage feels equally smooth, app launches are instantaneous and multitasking remains effortless on both devices.
Gaming performance is equally impressive. BGMI, Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt Legends run smoothly with stable frame rates. Motorola’s larger vapour chamber cooling system keeps temperatures impressively low during long gaming sessions, while iQOO counters with bypass charging and its Supercomputing Chip Q2 for gaming enhancements.

Neither phone is positioned as a camera flagship, but Motorola delivers a surprisingly polished experience. It features a 50MP Sony LYT-710 primary sensor with OIS, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP selfie shooter.
The iQOO 15R also offers a capable dual-camera setup with vivo’s imaging algorithms, producing natural-looking colours and reliable low-light performance.
However, Motorola produces better-balanced daylight photos with stronger dynamic range and improved contrast. Portraits also feature cleaner edge detection and more natural skin tones. Night photography is another area where Motorola edges ahead, producing cleaner images with better exposure control. Selfies are sharper and retain more facial detail as well.
