News in Short

  • Google has introduced Short Video Overviews for NotebookLM.
  • The feature creates 60-second AI-generated video summaries from uploaded documents.
  • It is powered by Nano Banana 2 Lite, Google’s AI image and video model.
  • Users can customize the video’s topic before generation.
  • The rollout starts in the coming weeks for English-speaking users aged 18+.

Google is making NotebookLM even more useful for students, researchers, and professionals. The company has announced Short Video Overviews, a new AI-powered feature that converts uploaded documents into concise one-minute videos. Powered by the Nano Banana 2 Lite model, the feature combines narration with educational animations to help users quickly understand key ideas without reading lengthy documents.

The update expands NotebookLM’s growing suite of AI learning tools and follows the earlier introduction of Cinematic Video Overviews.

What Are Short Video Overviews?

Short Video Overviews allow NotebookLM users to transform uploaded files into AI-generated videos that last about 60 seconds.

Instead of reading long reports, research papers, presentations, or notes, users can watch a brief visual summary that explains the most important information. Google says the feature is designed for people who need a quick revision before meetings, exams, or presentations.

Like Visual Overviews, the new feature automatically analyzes uploaded sources and creates narrated explainer videos with relevant animations.

Powered by Nano Banana 2 Lite

Google is using its Nano Banana 2 Lite model to power the feature.

The model debuted earlier this year as Google’s AI image generation and editing system. It now also supports short AI-generated videos while maintaining the visual quality introduced with Cinematic Video Overviews.

According to Google, Nano Banana 2 Lite enables faster video creation without compromising clarity or educational value.

Users Can Customize the Video

Google is also giving users more control over the final output.

Before generating a video, users can choose the Short format within NotebookLM and then select the documents they want to summarize.

The feature also lets users customize the video’s focus. They can either select one of Google’s suggested topics or enter their own prompt to guide the AI.

NotebookLM also offers three output formats:

  • Short
  • Explainer
  • Cinematic

Users can select individual sources and define the video’s main topic before generation.

Who Can Access the Feature?

Google says Short Video Overviews will begin rolling out over the coming weeks.

Initially, the feature will be available to English-speaking users aged 18 and older.

It will support both consumer and Google Workspace accounts across the web, Android, and iOS versions of NotebookLM.

Why This Matters

NotebookLM has evolved rapidly from an AI-powered note-taking assistant into a complete research and learning platform.

With the addition of Short Video Overviews, Google is making it easier for users to consume complex information in less time. Instead of reading dozens of pages, users can now generate a one-minute AI video that highlights the most important concepts.

As AI-powered productivity tools continue to evolve, NotebookLM is positioning itself as more than just an AI chatbot. It is becoming a learning assistant capable of turning documents into podcasts, explainers, and now short educational videos with just a few clicks.
