Google has finally brought Gemini to Windows PCs through a dedicated desktop application. The new app gives users direct access to Google’s AI assistant without requiring a browser window to stay open.

The Windows app is designed around everyday desktop workflows. Users can call Gemini while working inside another application, ask questions, check information or brainstorm ideas, then return to their previous task.

Google says the app is available globally for PCs running Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Gemini can be opened with a keyboard shortcut

One of the most useful additions is a system-wide shortcut.

Users can press Alt + Space to bring Gemini up over whatever application they are currently using. This means there is no need to switch to a browser or search for the Gemini tab.

For example, users can call Gemini while working on a document or presentation to fact-check information, generate ideas or get help with a task. Once the response is available, they can return to their original application.

This makes Gemini feel more like a desktop assistant rather than another website that needs to remain open.

Gemini gets a dedicated workspace for complex tasks

Google has also included a dedicated workspace for users who want to work on more involved projects.

The workspace provides access to Gemini’s broader capabilities, including Gemini Spark. Google describes Spark as a personal AI agent capable of handling multi-step tasks.

This gives the Windows app a use case beyond quick questions. Users can also connect Gemini with Google services such as Gmail and Google Drive.

Gemini can use relevant information from these connected services when completing a task. Google gives the example of asking Gemini to create a project summary using information spread across different Google apps.

Image and video generation come to Windows

Google is also bringing its generative media tools directly into the Windows application.

For images, users can access Nano Banana, Google’s image-generation technology. The app also supports video creation through Gemini Omni.

This means users can generate both images and videos without leaving the desktop Gemini experience.

For creators and professionals, having these tools available alongside other Windows applications could make it easier to move between AI-generated content and existing workflows.

Google says the app is lightweight

Google says it has designed the Gemini Windows app to be lightweight and run quietly in the background.

The company claims the app is designed not to slow down the PC while remaining ready when users need it.

Google also says the current release is only the beginning of its Windows desktop strategy. More native capabilities are expected to arrive through future updates.

Gemini vs browser access

The biggest change with the Windows app is convenience rather than a completely new Gemini experience.

The dedicated application removes the need to keep Gemini open in a browser. The Alt + Space shortcut also makes it easier to access the assistant while working in another application.

At the same time, Google is expanding the desktop experience with AI agents, connected Google services and built-in image and video generation.
