  • Equal AI has crossed one million monthly active users since launching its Android app.
  • The company plans to introduce iOS support, paid subscriptions, and AI-powered outbound actions.

Spam calls have become a daily reality for millions of Indians. Now, startup Equal AI believes artificial intelligence can do more than identify callers—it can answer them too. Equal AI has raised $30 million in fresh funding to expand its AI-powered call assistant platform that screens incoming calls, gathers information, and tells users why someone is calling before they decide whether to engage.

The funding highlights growing investor confidence in AI assistants designed for real-world consumer problems rather than just chat-based interactions.

What Is Equal AI and Why Is It Gaining Attention?

Equal AI is an Indian startup founded by Keshav Reddy in 2022. While the company initially focused on data-sharing services for financial institutions, it has recently shifted attention toward consumer-facing AI products.

Its flagship offering is an AI call assistant that acts as a gatekeeper for incoming calls. Instead of forcing users to answer unknown numbers, the assistant receives the call, speaks with the caller, and determines the purpose of the conversation.

The app then displays the reason for the call in real time. This allows users to decide whether the call deserves their attention.

The concept goes beyond traditional caller identification tools. Apps such as Truecaller and India’s Calling Name Presentation system can show who is calling. However, they often cannot explain why someone is calling. Equal AI aims to fill that gap.

How Does the Equal AI Call Assistant Work?

The Android app currently focuses on screening unknown callers.

When a call arrives, the AI assistant engages with the caller and collects information. It then provides users with a summary of the conversation. The app also offers call recordings, transcripts, and AI-generated summaries.

Users can respond without directly joining the conversation. The app provides quick reply options such as instructions for deliveries. Users can also type custom responses, which the AI reads back to callers.

This approach could be particularly useful for handling delivery agents, telemarketing calls, financial service inquiries, and recruitment-related calls.

According to the company, the platform has already surpassed one million monthly active users and more than 300,000 daily active users since launching last year.

Who Invested in Equal AI’s $30 Million Funding Round?

The latest Series B round was led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital.

Additional participation came from Think Investments and Valiant Fund. Several prominent individual investors also joined the round. These include PhonePe founder Sameer Nigam, Airtel Family Office member Zubin Bharti Mittal, Skyflow AI co-founder Anshu Sharma, Meta India and Southeast Asia Vice President Sandhya Devanathan, and CtrlS Datacenters Chairman Sridhar Pinnapureddy.

With this investment, Equal AI has now raised more than $42 million in total funding.

Interestingly, the funding round was structured in multiple stages tied to specific performance targets. The company did not disclose its valuation.

Why Is India a Major Market for AI Call Screening?

India receives an enormous volume of spam, marketing, and service-related calls every day. Consumers often struggle to distinguish legitimate calls from scams or unwanted solicitations.

This creates an opportunity for AI assistants that can filter conversations before users become involved.

According to founder Keshav Reddy, the company recognized that people often receive dozens of calls after applying for jobs, purchasing insurance, or signing up for financial services. Managing those interactions manually can become overwhelming.

As a result, AI-powered call management is emerging as a practical use case rather than a futuristic concept.

What’s Next for Equal AI?

The company is already working on several new features.

Future updates will allow users to screen calls from known contacts, not just unknown numbers. Equal AI is also developing capabilities that could enable the assistant to take actions on a user’s behalf.

For example, the AI may be able to share delivery instructions with a courier after receiving user consent. The company is also exploring outbound calling features that could help users book appointments or complete routine tasks.

In addition, an iOS version of the app is currently under development. A paid subscription tier with advanced features is also planned.

How Is Equal AI Competing Against Big Tech?

Equal AI enters a market that already includes major technology companies.

Google and Apple offer call screening tools in select markets. Meanwhile, Truecaller has expanded beyond caller identification into AI-powered assistant features.

However, Equal AI believes its local focus gives it an advantage. The company says its technology supports more than ten languages and can handle code-mixed conversations, where users blend English with regional languages during the same interaction.

That capability could prove important in India, where multilingual communication is part of everyday life.

The company uses a combination of speech recognition, automatic speech recognition technology, speech generation systems, and its own orchestration layer to power these interactions.
