Claude is facing renewed scrutiny after some shared chatbot conversations appeared in Google and Bing search results, raising fresh concerns about AI privacy. While the chats were shared through public URLs created by users, many people were surprised to learn that these conversations could become searchable on the web. The incident highlights how search engine indexing works and why privacy controls for AI chatbots remain an important challenge.

The issue was first noticed over the weekend after users discovered that searching for Claude shared URLs revealed conversations covering legal questions, political advice, and even personal role-play scenarios. Although many of the indexed pages have since disappeared from Google, some results remained visible on Bing when the issue came to light.

Why Did Claude Chats Appear in Search Results?

The conversations were not the result of a hack or security breach. Instead, they involved Claude’s “Shared Chat” feature, which allows users to generate a public link to a specific conversation.

These links are designed to let people share AI conversations with friends, colleagues, or collaborators. However, once a webpage is publicly accessible, search engines may discover and index it unless developers take additional technical steps to prevent that from happening.

Anthropic has long used a robots.txt file to tell web crawlers that shared chat pages should not be indexed. Archived versions of the company’s website indicate these instructions have existed since at least 2025.

However, robots.txt is only a request to search engines. It is not a guaranteed method of preventing search engines from listing pages in search results.

Why Was robots.txt Not Enough?

The incident has drawn attention to a lesser-known aspect of web indexing.

Major search engines such as Google and Bing recommend that websites use a “noindex” meta tag or an “X-Robots-Tag” HTTP header when developers want to prevent pages from appearing in search results.

According to technical guidance published by both companies, robots.txt primarily controls whether web crawlers access a page. If a page is publicly available and linked elsewhere on the internet, search engines may still index it under certain conditions unless a noindex directive is also present.

Reports reviewing the exposed Claude pages found they did not include the noindex tag, making it possible for search engines to list those URLs despite the robots.txt instructions.

Google later removed the affected results from its search listings. Bing, however, reportedly continued showing some indexed shared chat pages for a period after the issue became public.

Who Is Responsible?

Google says website owners decide whether pages should be indexed.

A Google spokesperson stated that search engines respect the controls provided by site owners and that the indexed Claude pages were publicly available on the web. Google also noted that the same pages appeared across multiple search engines.

Anthropic has not publicly explained why the shared chat pages did not include a noindex tag. The company also did not immediately comment on reports surrounding the incident.

Notably, this is not the first time the issue has surfaced. Similar concerns were raised in 2025, when reports suggested that relying only on robots.txt was insufficient to keep shared AI conversations out of search results.

What Should Claude Users Do?

The incident serves as an important reminder that creating a public share link can make online content discoverable in unexpected ways.

Users who previously shared Claude conversations should review their account settings. Shared chats can be managed through the Privacy section in Claude’s settings, where users can remove or disable public links if they no longer want those conversations to remain accessible.

It is also worth remembering that any content intentionally shared through a public URL should be treated as potentially visible to others, even if it is not immediately searchable.
