Google is taking voice search to the next level with its latest update — Search Live with Voice in AI Mode. Designed for natural, back-and-forth conversations, this new feature is now available to Android and iOS users in the U.S. enrolled in Google’s Labs experiment.
Talk to Google Like a Human
With this update, users can tap the new “Live” icon in the Google app and start a real-time voice chat. You can ask something like, “How do I pack a linen dress without wrinkles?” and get an instant, AI-generated spoken reply. Want to follow up? Just keep talking. There’s no need to rephrase or type again.
Google Voice Search now works more like a smart assistant that listens, responds, and continues the conversation naturally.
Multitask and Search Hands-Free
This feature is perfect for people who are busy, multitasking, or on the move. Search Live continues working even if you switch to another app. For example, you can ask about your travel list while texting friends at the same time.
And if you need to revisit what was said, tap the “transcript” button to read everything or type a new question.
What Powers the New Voice Search?
Behind the scenes, Google is using a custom Gemini model built specifically for Search. This model combines powerful AI voice capabilities with Google’s best information systems. It also uses a query fan-out technique, helping you discover more diverse content from across the web.
This means that while you’re speaking with Search, you’ll still see helpful links to explore further — keeping the experience open and connected to the wider internet.
Coming Soon: Visual Input with Your Camera
Google says this is just the beginning. In the coming months, Search Live will support visual input, letting you show Google what you’re seeing while talking. This will add another layer of real-time interaction, combining voice, visuals, and web links in one experience.
How to Try Search Live Voice?
To access Search Live, opt in to the AI Mode experiment in Google Labs. Once you’re in, you’ll see the Live icon just under the search bar in the app.
