AMD has expanded its desktop CPU portfolio with two new Ryzen 5 processors. The Ryzen 5 7500 targets newer AM5-based PCs, while the Ryzen 5 5500F gives users another option for systems built around the older AM4 platform.

Both processors use a six-core, 12-thread configuration. However, they are based on different CPU architectures and platforms. This makes the two chips relevant to different types of PC upgrades.

AMD Ryzen 5 7500: Zen 4 with integrated graphics

The Ryzen 5 7500 is built on AMD’s Zen 4 architecture and uses the AM5 socket. It has a 3.7GHz base clock and can boost up to 5GHz.

The processor includes 6MB of L2 cache and 32MB of L3 cache, while its default TDP is rated at 65W.

One of its notable advantages is integrated Radeon Graphics. This means the processor can handle basic display output without requiring a dedicated graphics card, although a discrete GPU would still be important for gaming and other graphics-intensive workloads.

AMD uses TSMC’s 5nm FinFET process for the CPU cores and a 6nm FinFET process for the I/O die.

The Ryzen 5 7500 supports a broad range of AM5 chipsets, including A620, B650, B650E, B850, B840, X670, X670E, X870 and X870E.

AMD Ryzen 5 5500F targets AM4 PCs

The Ryzen 5 5500F takes a different approach. It is based on Zen 3 and uses the AM4 socket, making it an option for users who want to build or upgrade an AM4 desktop without moving to a newer platform.

It features six cores and 12 threads, with a 3GHz base clock and boost speeds of up to 4.4GHz.

The processor has 3MB of L2 cache and 16MB of L3 cache, along with a 65W default TDP.

AMD manufactures the CPU cores using TSMC’s 7nm FinFET process.

The Ryzen 5 5500F supports several AM4 chipsets, including X570, X470, X370, B550, B450, B350 and A520.

Unlike the Ryzen 5 7500, the 5500F does not offer integrated Radeon Graphics. Users building a PC around this chip will therefore need a compatible graphics card for display output.

The key difference between the two processors is therefore not the core count. Both offer six cores and 12 threads. The bigger distinction comes from the underlying architecture and platform.

The Ryzen 5 7500 is aimed at newer AM5 systems and offers higher clock speeds, more cache and integrated graphics. The Ryzen 5 5500F, meanwhile, is positioned for the large installed base of AM4 desktops.

Cooling and software support

Both processors come with AMD’s Wraith Stealth thermal solution. They have a maximum operating temperature of 95 degrees Celsius.

The new CPUs support 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, along with RHEL and Ubuntu.

AMD has not provided pricing details in the supplied information. The company has also not specified an India launch price here.

For buyers, the choice between the two CPUs will largely depend on the motherboard platform. The Ryzen 5 7500 is the more modern AM5 option, while the Ryzen 5 5500F is aimed at keeping AM4 builds relevant without requiring a platform change.
