Google has introduced the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker designed to bridge the gap between a full-featured smartwatch and a simpler fitness band. It combines a display-focused design with advanced workout tracking, health monitoring and Google’s personalised health coaching tools.

The Fitbit Edge costs $179.99 in the US and is available to pre-order through the Google Store and retail partners. Retail availability begins on October 27. Google is also including three months of Google Health Premium with the purchase.

Google has introduced a Stephen Curry Special Edition alongside the standard model. Priced at $219.99, this version features colours inspired by the basketball star’s style, including rye tones and game-day orange.

The company has not provided Indian pricing or availability details in the announcement.

Google Fitbit Edge design and display

The Fitbit Edge features a slim design with a recycled aluminium case. It measures 11.5mm thick and uses a curved profile intended to sit comfortably on the wrist throughout the day and night.

Google says its case is 45% lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12. However, the company has not provided a standalone weight figure in the announcement.

The tracker features a Hybrid OLED display, which offers 46% more viewing area than previous Fitbit trackers. Google also says the screen remains readable in direct sunlight.

A physical side button provides tactile feedback for quick actions, including pausing workouts. The interface uses glanceable tiles, customisable watch faces and health metrics to make information easier to access.

Users can also check steps, weather, heart rate and sleep information directly on their wrist. Other everyday features include Google Maps, media controls, and call and message notifications.

Google Fitbit Edge fitness tracking and GPS

The Fitbit Edge supports more than 50 exercise modes. Its workout interface displays real-time guidance and relevant metrics for activities such as Pilates, running, high-intensity interval training and track workouts.

Google has also upgraded the built-in GPS. The company claims up to 40% better tracking accuracy than previous generations, allowing users to map outdoor routes without carrying their phones.

An integrated altimeter measures elevation changes during outdoor runs, hill sprints and stair workouts. This can help users understand their effort during activities that involve changes in elevation.

The tracker can also automatically recognise and categorise up to 100 workouts. Google says its activity-recognition system analyses movement and context, allowing it to record eligible activities even when users forget to start tracking manually.

Google Fitbit Edge health features and AI coaching

Health monitoring is a major focus of the Fitbit Edge. Its sensors track heart rate continuously and support on-wrist ECG assessments, allowing users to check their heart rhythm.

The tracker also monitors skin temperature, sleep stages and heart-rate variability. These measurements contribute to recovery insights and a daily recovery score.

Google’s Health Guardian features monitor changes in blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends and high or low heart rates. These functions are intended to help users notice changes in their health patterns.

Google Health Premium adds personalised guidance through Google’s Health Coach. The service can interpret changes in tracked patterns, suggest lifestyle adjustments and adapt fitness plans.

Google also says the coach can provide context for conversations with a doctor. However, these tracking tools should not replace professional medical assessment.

The announcement does not specify that the tracker directly measures blood pressure or insulin resistance. Instead, Google describes these functions as trend monitoring.

Google Fitbit Edge battery life and charging

Google claims the Fitbit Edge can last up to seven days on a single charge. This could allow users to track workouts during the day and monitor sleep overnight without frequent charging.

The tracker supports magnetic fast charging. Google says five minutes of charging can provide up to a full day of battery life when the battery is low.

Actual battery life may vary depending on GPS use, display settings and health-monitoring features. Frequent outdoor workouts and continuous tracking can affect endurance.

The device is water-resistant up to 50 metres, making it suitable for a range of workouts and water-based activities within its stated rating.

Repairability, bands and special edition

The Fitbit Edge is Google’s first repairable fitness tracker, according to the company. Its internal modular architecture and replaceable battery are designed to extend the device’s useful life.

The standard tracker comes in four finishes: Obsidian with a matte black case, Fog with a polished silver case, Olive with a satin pyrite case, and Canyon with a warm gold case.

Users can also choose interchangeable accessories, including Active Sport, Performance Loop, Magnet and Metal Links bands. These options allow the tracker to adapt to workouts and everyday wear.

The Stephen Curry Special Edition adds a distinctive colour scheme and costs $219.99. The standard Fitbit Edge costs $179.99.

With a brighter display, extensive workout recognition, advanced health tracking and a replaceable battery, the Fitbit Edge expands Google’s fitness tracker lineup. Its final appeal will depend on how well these features work in daily use and which health tools are available in each market.
