A team of researchers from IIT Delhi, AIIMS New Delhi, and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) has developed India’s first Hindi version of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a music-based speech rehabilitation technique for stroke survivors. The therapy is designed to help patients with non-fluent aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to speak after a stroke, by using melody and rhythm to rebuild language skills.
The research has been published in the international journal Aphasiology and marks an important step toward making speech therapy more accessible for millions of Hindi-speaking patients across India.
What Is Melodic Intonation Therapy?
Melodic Intonation Therapy is a well-established rehabilitation technique that uses music to help stroke survivors regain speech. Many people with aphasia lose the ability to speak fluently even though they can still understand language and remember familiar songs.
The therapy taps into this preserved musical ability by encouraging patients to use melody and rhythm to produce words and sentences. Over time, these musical patterns help retrain the brain’s language pathways, gradually restoring speech.
While MIT has been widely used in English and several Western languages for decades, India did not have a validated Hindi version until now.
Why Was a Hindi Version Needed?
According to the researchers, simply translating English therapy material into Hindi was not enough. Hindi has its own rhythm, stress patterns, and sentence flow, which required the therapy to be redesigned rather than directly translated.
The research team adapted both the language and musical structure of the therapy so that it matched how Hindi is naturally spoken. This makes the exercises more intuitive for patients recovering from stroke.
Given that Hindi is the primary language for hundreds of millions of Indians, researchers believe the localized approach could significantly improve rehabilitation outcomes.
What Did the Pilot Study Find?
The pilot study involved six Hindi-speaking stroke survivors diagnosed with non-fluent aphasia. Each participant completed 40 therapy sessions lasting between 45 and 60 minutes under the supervision of a trained speech therapist.
According to the research team, every participant achieved what clinicians describe as a clinically meaningful improvement.
Patients were able to form longer sentences, speak with greater confidence, and reported improvements in their overall quality of life. Importantly, researchers observed no adverse effects during the therapy.
However, the team emphasized that these findings represent early evidence rather than definitive clinical proof because of the small sample size.
What’s Next for the Research?
The researchers now plan to conduct larger clinical studies to validate the effectiveness of the Hindi version of Melodic Intonation Therapy across a broader patient population.
They are also exploring digital tools that could make the therapy available remotely, allowing stroke survivors outside major hospitals to benefit from the treatment.
The interdisciplinary project brought together experts in engineering, neurology, speech therapy, ENT, and rehabilitation from IIT Delhi, AIIMS New Delhi, and IHBAS. By combining medical science with language and music, the team hopes to improve recovery outcomes for stroke survivors across India.
If future studies confirm these promising early results, the Hindi version of Melodic Intonation Therapy could become an important addition to stroke rehabilitation programs, giving thousands of patients a better chance to find their voice again.
