Threads is bringing Meta AI directly into users’ inboxes. Meta has announced that its AI chatbot is now rolling out inside Threads direct messages (DMs), allowing users to have private conversations with the assistant without leaving the app. The global rollout begins Monday and marks another major step in Meta’s strategy to embed AI across its social platforms.
Previously, users in select markets could interact with Meta AI only through public Threads posts. With this update, those conversations can now happen privately.
What Can You Do With Meta AI in Threads DMs?
The new integration allows users to chat with Meta AI directly from their inbox. Beyond asking questions, users can also share Threads posts, images, videos, and web links with the chatbot to receive explanations, recommendations, or follow-up responses.
The AI can continue conversations naturally, enabling users to explore topics without switching to another app or AI assistant.
Meta AI is already available in direct messages across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Bringing the same experience to Threads creates a more connected AI ecosystem across Meta’s platforms.
Why Is Meta Bringing AI to Threads?
Meta’s latest move is designed to make Threads more than a social conversation platform. By embedding AI into private chats, the company wants users to search for information, ask questions, and get recommendations without relying on third-party tools such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
The company is also continuing to test Meta AI in Threads’ public feeds across selected markets. Users who prefer fewer AI interactions can mute the @meta.ai account, mark AI posts as “Not interested,” or hide AI-generated replies on their own posts.
