Instagram has started banning users who secretly record people using Meta Glasses and upload the videos as harassment content. The move comes after growing criticism over creators using the wearable cameras to film strangers without consent. Meta confirmed that some Instagram accounts were removed for violating its policies, marking one of the platform’s strongest actions against the misuse of smart glasses.

Why is Instagram banning Meta Glasses users?

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the platform will remove content that takes advantage of or harasses people. According to him, videos that secretly record strangers and turn them into prank or pickup-style content violate Instagram’s policies.

Many of these clips feature creators approaching service workers or random people in public while wearing Meta Glasses. Since the glasses allow hands-free recording, the people being filmed often do not realize a camera is recording them.

Business Insider reported that Meta deactivated at least two well-known Instagram accounts that regularly posted videos of women recorded without their knowledge. Meta confirmed that the accounts were removed specifically for sharing harassment content captured using its smart glasses.

Why are Meta Glasses facing privacy criticism?

Meta Glasses include a small LED light that turns on whenever recording starts. The light is meant to alert nearby people that the camera is active.

However, many users have found ways to hide that indicator. Some covered the light with tape, while others used film or even modified the hardware. This allowed recordings to happen without obvious visual signals.
