Anthropic has started rolling out Indian rupee pricing for Claude subscriptions in India, marking another major step in its expansion strategy. The change allows eligible users to pay for Claude in local currency instead of US dollars, reducing currency conversion hassles. However, Indian customers still cannot pay through UPI, one of the country’s most widely used digital payment methods.
The rollout highlights India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence race. According to Anthropic, India has become Claude’s biggest market outside the United States, accounting for 5.8% of its worldwide usage.
What Has Changed for Claude Users in India?
Anthropic has begun displaying local pricing for Claude on its website and mobile apps for some users across India. Previously, subscriptions were billed in US dollars, making the final cost unpredictable because of exchange rates and international transaction fees.
With the new pricing, Claude Pro costs ₹2,000 per month when billed annually. Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 per month, while Team plans begin at ₹2,399 per user each month. These prices include applicable local taxes.
However, users still need to pay using credit or debit cards or through Apple’s and Google’s in-app billing systems. Unlike OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic has not yet introduced Unified Payments Interface (UPI) support for Indian subscribers.
Why Is Anthropic Focusing on India?
The Anthropic India strategy has accelerated over the past year. The company opened its Bengaluru office earlier this year after announcing its India expansion plans in 2025. It also appointed former Microsoft India executive Irina Ghose to lead its business operations in the country.
Beyond consumer subscriptions, Anthropic is also targeting enterprises. The AI company recently partnered with Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to help businesses deploy generative AI solutions at scale.
India offers one of the world’s largest communities of developers, software engineers, and AI professionals. That makes it an attractive market for companies building AI platforms. However, converting free users into paying subscribers remains challenging because of India’s price-sensitive consumer base.
Why Is UPI Still Missing?
While local pricing removes one barrier, payment convenience remains another challenge.
UPI has become India’s preferred digital payment system, handling billions of monthly transactions. Competitors such as OpenAI already allow Indian users to subscribe to ChatGPT using UPI alongside local currency pricing.
Anthropic has not explained when or whether UPI payments will be added. The company also did not respond publicly to requests for comment on the pricing rollout.
Recent Challenges and the Road Ahead
Anthropic’s India expansion has not been without hurdles. Earlier this year, the company temporarily restricted access to some of its advanced AI models for users outside the United States. The decision affected several developers and startups in India that relied on those models. While access to one affected model has since resumed, another remains limited.
Even so, the launch of rupee pricing signals that Anthropic sees India as a long-term growth market. Local pricing reduces friction for subscribers and aligns Claude more closely with competing AI services already adapting to India’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem.
As Anthropic continues investing in partnerships, enterprise deployments, and local operations, the introduction of Anthropic rupee pricing could become another important step in making Claude more accessible to Indian users.
