News in Short

  • Apple’s upcoming iPad mini 8 could feature a 60Hz OLED display without ProMotion support.
  • The tablet is tipped to use an LTPS OLED panel rather than the LTPO technology used in iPad Pro models.
  • Earlier rumours suggested the iPad mini 8 could support a 120Hz refresh rate.
  • The tablet is expected to feature Apple’s A20 Pro chipset and may support Apple Intelligence.
  • Apple could unveil the iPad mini 8 at its October event, although the launch date remains unconfirmed.

Apple’s next compact tablet could get an OLED display upgrade without receiving one of the most noticeable screen improvements users might expect. The upcoming iPad mini 8 is tipped to retain a standard 60Hz refresh rate despite switching to OLED technology.

The latest leak contradicts earlier reports that Apple could bring a 120Hz display to its next-generation compact tablet. If accurate, the move would mean the iPad mini 8 gains OLED technology but misses out on the smoother scrolling and animations associated with higher refresh rates.

The tablet is also expected to feature Apple’s A20 Pro chipset. However, Apple has yet to confirm its specifications or launch plans.

iPad mini 8 could get OLED but miss 120Hz ProMotion

According to a leak attributed to Korean tipster yeux1122, the iPad mini 8 could feature a 60Hz OLED panel without ProMotion support.

The tablet is reportedly expected to use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED technology. This differs from the more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels used in iPad Pro models.

LTPO technology supports variable refresh rates, allowing a display to adjust its refresh rate depending on the content. By contrast, a 60Hz panel refreshes up to 60 times per second.

As a result, the iPad mini 8 could deliver OLED’s display benefits without matching the smoother experience offered by 120Hz tablets. The difference would be particularly noticeable when scrolling through pages, navigating interfaces or playing games that support higher refresh rates.

Earlier rumours pointed to a 120Hz display

The latest report conflicts with earlier speculation that Apple could equip the iPad mini 8 with a 120Hz display.

A higher refresh rate would have marked a notable improvement over the existing iPad mini 7. However, the reported use of an LTPS OLED panel suggests Apple could reserve its more advanced display technology for premium devices.

Apple has continued to position ProMotion as a feature of its higher-end products, including the iPad Pro. Still, the standard iPhone 17 has also introduced a 120Hz ProMotion display, making the reported limitation on the iPad mini 8 more notable.

If the leak proves accurate, buyers may need to weigh the benefits of OLED against the absence of a higher refresh rate.

A20 Pro chipset and Apple Intelligence support expected

The iPad mini 8 is also tipped to use Apple’s A20 Pro chipset. However, the leak does not provide confirmed details about its performance, memory or storage configurations.

The tablet could also bring several design and hardware changes. These reportedly include a repositioned front-facing FaceTime camera designed for landscape use and an upgraded speaker system.

A water-resistant design has also been rumoured. In addition, the A20 Pro chipset could help the tablet support Apple Intelligence features, although Apple has not confirmed the device’s AI capabilities.

These upgrades could make the next iPad mini more capable for productivity, video calls and everyday use. However, their impact will depend on the final hardware and software implementation.

iPad mini 8 launch could happen in October

Apple is expected to host its ‘Welcome Home’ event on October 13. The company could use the event to introduce new smart home products, with the iPad mini 8 also tipped to appear.

However, another report suggests Apple could hold a separate event on October 27. The tablet’s unveiling date therefore remains uncertain.

Apple has not officially confirmed the iPad mini 8, its display specifications or its launch timeline. The reported 60Hz OLED panel should also be treated as unconfirmed until the company announces the device.

If the latest leak holds true, the iPad mini 8 could deliver a meaningful display technology upgrade without addressing one of the key requests from users seeking smoother visuals. Its final appeal will depend on how Apple balances OLED quality, performance and other hardware improvements.
