News in short

  • Garmin has launched its ECG App in India for select compatible smartwatches.
  • The app records a 30-second ECG reading using the watch’s built-in sensors.
  • It checks readings for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) or normal sinus rhythm.
  • Users can view readings on the watch and through the Garmin Connect app.
  • The feature is intended for adults aged 22 and above and is not a substitute for medical care.

Garmin has expanded its ECG App availability to India, bringing heart rhythm checks to select compatible smartwatches. Users can record a 30-second electrocardiogram (ECG) directly from their wrist.

The app analyses the heart’s electrical activity for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heart rhythm. Users can view the result on their smartwatch or access it through Garmin Connect.

The feature also lets users save previous readings and generate reports to share with their doctors. However, Garmin says the app is not intended to replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

Compatible Garmin smartwatches and app requirements

Garmin’s ECG App is available on select models in India, including the Fenix 9, Venu 4 and Forerunner 970. The company says users need the latest versions of both the Garmin Connect smartphone app and compatible smartwatch software.

The watch uses built-in sensors to record the heart’s electrical signals. The app then checks the reading for signs of AFib or normal sinus rhythm, which indicates a regular heartbeat.

Users can review saved recordings in Garmin Connect. They can also create reports and share them with a healthcare professional.

The feature could offer a convenient way to capture a heart rhythm reading outside a clinical setting. Still, a smartwatch reading alone cannot confirm a medical condition.

Garmin ECG App is not a medical diagnosis tool

Garmin says the ECG App is intended for adults aged 22 and above. It can identify signs of AFib or normal sinus rhythm, but it does not replace professional medical advice.

The company also warns users not to rely on a smartwatch reading during a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, stroke or another cardiovascular condition should seek medical attention.

The India launch expands Garmin’s health-monitoring features on compatible watches. Availability remains limited to supported models, rather than the company’s entire smartwatch lineup.

Garmin recently launched the Cirqa Smart Band in India, with heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, stress monitoring and skin temperature measurement. The band is priced at Rs. 29,990, with a limited-time launch price of Rs. 25,990.
