YouTube Shorts is getting a major refresh with new features designed to make short-form videos faster and easier to watch. The latest YouTube Shorts update introduces 2x playback speed, removes the dislike button, replaces likes with a heart reaction, and adds a distraction-free viewing mode. Google says these changes will roll out gradually to improve how people interact with Shorts.

The update focuses on helping users consume content more efficiently while simplifying the overall interface.

What Is Changing in YouTube Shorts?

The biggest addition is 2x playback speed. Users can now watch Shorts at double speed, allowing them to finish videos faster or quickly jump to the most interesting moments. According to YouTube, the feature helps viewers absorb information more quickly and revisit favorite sections without waiting through the entire clip.

Although Shorts are already designed for quick viewing, YouTube believes faster playback gives users greater control over how they consume content.

Another notable change is the removal of the dislike button. Instead of downvoting a video, viewers can now use the “Not Interested” or “Don’t recommend this channel” options to personalize their recommendations. The platform is shifting away from public negative feedback while still allowing users to improve their content feeds.

Why Did YouTube Remove the Dislike Button?

YouTube has not positioned the change as a removal of feedback tools. Instead, it is encouraging users to rely on recommendation controls that directly influence what appears in their feed.

At the same time, the traditional thumbs-up icon is being replaced with a heart emoji. The change gives creators a more expressive form of positive engagement while keeping interactions simple.

The company has also introduced Clear Screen mode. This feature temporarily hides icons, captions, and other interface elements so viewers can focus entirely on the video without distractions.

When Will the New Features Arrive?

YouTube says the new Shorts experience will roll out over time. The company has not announced a specific release schedule, meaning availability may vary by device and region.

The updates arrive as YouTube continues to strengthen its position in the competitive short-video market. Shorts has grown rapidly since launch, attracting hundreds of billions of daily views and expanding beyond smartphones to connected TVs.

As viewing habits continue to evolve, the latest YouTube Shorts update highlights YouTube’s focus on speed, simplicity, and personalized content discovery while making short-form videos even quicker to consume.
