News in Short

  • Google is expanding Gemini Avatar to more paid Gemini subscribers.
  • The feature creates an AI version of a user using face and voice training.
  • Gemini Avatar is powered by Google’s new Gemini Omni model.
  • All generated videos include Google’s SynthID watermark for transparency.

Google is widening access to Gemini Avatar, a feature that lets users create an AI-powered version of themselves inside Gemini. The tool can replicate a person’s face, voice, and mannerisms, allowing them to generate AI content featuring their digital likeness. The expansion brings one of Google’s most advanced AI experiences to a larger group of paid subscribers.

The move comes as competition in AI-generated video and digital avatar technology continues to intensify.

What Is Gemini Avatar?

Gemini Avatar is Google’s personalized AI avatar system built into the Gemini app. Once created, the avatar can appear in AI-generated videos and other content experiences.

The feature is powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s multimodal AI model. According to Google, Omni can process different types of inputs and generate different forms of content from a single prompt.

Users can access the feature through the Gemini app settings. After setup, the avatar becomes linked to the user’s Google account and can be used across Gemini experiences.

How Does Gemini Avatar Create an AI Version of You?

The setup process involves two training stages.

First, users complete a camera-based facial scan. During this step, they hold their phone at eye level and follow prompts while the system captures multiple views of their face. This helps Gemini build a detailed facial model.

Next comes voice training. Users read random phrases and numbers aloud. Gemini then analyzes speech patterns, tone, pronunciation, accent, and cadence.

Once both stages are complete, the system creates a personalized AI avatar that closely matches the user’s appearance and voice.

Google recommends good lighting during enrollment. Users must keep their eyes, nose, and mouth clearly visible. Glasses are allowed, but masks, sunglasses, and hats are not. The company also advises users to avoid backgrounds containing other faces.

Why Is Google Expanding Gemini Avatar Now?

The broader rollout reflects growing demand for AI-generated content that feels personal and interactive.

Digital avatars are becoming a major focus across the AI industry. Companies increasingly see personalized AI characters as tools for content creation, communication, education, and entertainment.

By integrating avatar creation directly into Gemini, Google is positioning the platform as more than a chatbot. It is evolving into a full AI creation platform that can generate text, images, audio, and now personalized video experiences.

What Safeguards Has Google Added?

Google says several protections are built into Gemini Avatar.

Users must be at least 18 years old to create an avatar. The account owner must also remain physically present during the enrollment process.

In addition, every video generated through Gemini Avatar includes Google’s SynthID watermark. The watermark remains invisible to viewers but can be detected using Google’s verification tools.

The company says this measure helps identify AI-generated content and may reduce the risk of impersonation and misuse.

Will Free Gemini Users Get Access?

Google has not confirmed whether Gemini Avatar will eventually become available to free users.

For now, the feature remains limited to paid Gemini subscribers. However, the wider rollout suggests Google is gradually increasing availability as it refines the technology and safety measures.

As AI-generated media becomes more realistic, Gemini Avatar highlights how quickly personal AI clones are moving from experimental tools to mainstream consumer products.
