News in Short
- OpenAI has launched virtual try-on and Favorites features for ChatGPT shopping.
- Users can upload a selfie or full-body photo to visualize clothing and accessories.
- A new Try On button will appear in eligible ChatGPT shopping results.
- Users can also upload an image of an item and ask ChatGPT to try it on.
OpenAI is adding a new visual shopping feature to ChatGPT. Users can now virtually try on clothes and accessories before deciding whether to buy them.
The feature is part of two new shopping updates rolling out globally. Alongside virtual try-on, OpenAI has introduced Favorites, which lets users save products they discover while shopping.
The updates use OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.5 model for the visual experiences.
How does ChatGPT’s virtual try-on work?
The virtual try-on feature lets users upload a selfie or full-body photo. ChatGPT can then generate a visual showing how a selected clothing item or accessory could look on them.
A new Try On button will appear in ChatGPT’s shopping results where the feature is available.
Users can also start with an image of the product. For example, they can upload a screenshot of a clothing item found online and ask ChatGPT to virtually try it on.
This gives users another way to evaluate an item without physically trying it first.
However, the generated image is a visualisation. It should not be treated as a guarantee of how the actual garment will fit or look in person.
What else can ChatGPT do while shopping?
OpenAI is also adding a Favorites option to its shopping experience.
Users can save products they discover to a Library inside the ChatGPT app. Saved items can be revisited later, while try-on images can also be stored alongside them.
This could make it easier to compare products or return to items after browsing.
ChatGPT can also help users build an entire outfit. Users can describe a style they want to try and ask the assistant to find products that match the look.
ChatGPT can find products from outfit photos
The shopping experience also works with fashion inspiration images.
Users can upload a photo of an outfit and ask ChatGPT to identify the items or find similar products that are available to purchase.
This puts ChatGPT into an area where visual discovery has traditionally played an important role.
Platforms such as Pinterest and Google have already used image-based discovery to connect fashion inspiration with products.
ChatGPT is now adding a similar capability to its conversational shopping experience.
ChatGPT Images 2.5 powers the new features
OpenAI says the new shopping capabilities use its ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.
The company claims the model produces more natural lighting and richer textures. It also says the model follows editing instructions more reliably and generates images with lower latency.
These capabilities are particularly relevant to virtual try-on because the system needs to combine a user’s photo with the appearance of another product.
The quality of the final visual will depend on the source image, product image and the model’s ability to preserve details.
OpenAI expands ChatGPT’s role in shopping
The new features arrive as AI assistants increasingly explore online shopping.
OpenAI has previously experimented with other shopping experiences, including instant checkout. The company later changed direction after that approach did not perform as expected, according to the source report.
Meanwhile, other AI companies are also experimenting with product recommendations and shopping assistance.
Google launched its own virtual try-on feature in 2025. ChatGPT’s new capability therefore enters an already developing area of AI-powered fashion discovery.
For users, the new features make ChatGPT more useful as a visual shopping assistant, from discovering products to seeing how an item might look and saving it for later.
