Bharti Airtel has introduced three voice-and-SMS-only prepaid plans, giving customers more recharge options without bundled mobile data. The plans cost ₹185, ₹203 and ₹206 and offer different validity periods.

The launch follows the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) framework for voice-and-SMS-only recharge options. Airtel is the first telecom operator reported to have introduced these shorter-validity options under the new framework.

The plans target customers who primarily use their phones for calling and messaging. They may also suit people who access the internet mainly through Wi-Fi or maintain a secondary SIM for voice calls.

Airtel voice-only plans: Price and benefits

The three recharges offer unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, along with 300 SMS. None includes a bundled mobile data allowance. Customers also receive free HelloTunes with each plan.

The ₹185 prepaid plan provides 28 days of validity. It is the lowest-priced option in the new lineup and suits customers who prefer a shorter recharge cycle.

The ₹203 plan offers 30 days of validity with the same calling and SMS benefits. It costs ₹18 more than the ₹185 recharge and provides two additional days of validity.

The ₹206 plan comes with one-month validity. It retains unlimited calling, 300 SMS and free HelloTunes, without bundled mobile data.

Customers can find all three plans on the Airtel app and website.

Why Airtel is introducing voice-only recharges

Not every prepaid customer needs a data allowance with every recharge. Some users rely on Wi-Fi for internet access, while others primarily use their phones for voice calls and text messages.

Voice-only plans give these customers an option to pay for services they actually use. The different validity periods also offer more flexibility when choosing a recharge.

The plans could be useful for feature phone users, people maintaining a secondary number and customers who want to keep a calling connection active without paying for bundled mobile data.

However, customers who regularly use mobile internet will need a separate data plan or a recharge that includes data benefits.

What the new TRAI framework means

The launch follows TRAI’s requirement for telecom operators to offer dedicated voice-and-SMS recharge options with appropriate tariff reductions. The framework also calls for shorter-validity packs, a monthly renewal option and at least one longer-validity offering.

Airtel’s three new plans provide different validity choices while retaining the same core calling and SMS benefits.

The move gives customers another way to select prepaid recharges based on their usage. Whether these plans deliver meaningful savings will depend on how their prices compare with other available recharges and the needs of individual users.
