Instagram Repost Feature Under Testing
Instagram is experimenting with a new repost feature that allows users to share posts directly in their feed.
A New Way to Share on Instagram
Meta confirmed that it’s testing the repost feature with select users. This move has been in development since 2022, but it’s now showing up for some accounts. The new tool will let users reshare others’ posts and their own directly to their followers’ feed, not just Stories.
How Is It Different From Existing Options?
Currently, users can only reshare posts to Stories or use third-party apps for full post reposting. With this feature, users will finally be able to amplify content natively — without workarounds or apps.
Creators May Benefit from the Change
This could help content creators get more visibility and proper credit when their work goes viral. Right now, many reposts don’t tag or acknowledge the original source. An official tool may help fix that problem.
A Crowded Platform Gets Another Forced Feature
However, not everyone may welcome this update. Instagram already juggles multiple content types—Stories, Reels, Notes, DMs, and ads. Many users feel there are already enough ways to share—like Stories or DMs. Adding another format might make the platform feel even more cluttered.
This also raises a valid question: is the repost feature truly a value-add, or just another change for the sake of change—like Notes? The low adoption of Notes forced Instagram to tweak it by allowing music sharing via Spotify, but even that sees limited engagement.
Inspired by Twitter and Threads
Instagram isn’t alone in adopting this idea. Threads, TikTok, and even LinkedIn now support reposts. But it was Twitter (now X) that first made the concept popular with its retweet feature in 2009.
No Official Rollout Timeline Yet
Since this is a test, there’s no confirmed date for a wider rollout. But if feedback is strong, Instagram might soon bring reposts to all.
