Google Maps gets Gemini boost

News in Short

  • Google Maps may soon let users order food with AI assistance.
  • The feature was spotted in the latest Android app version.
  • AI is expected to simplify repeat food orders from favorite restaurants.
  • Users will likely approve payments manually.
  • The feature also raises privacy and security concerns.

Google Maps could soon do more than help you find restaurants—it may also place food orders for you. A new report suggests Google is developing an AI-powered feature that can handle food ordering directly within the Maps app, making it easier for users to reorder meals from their favorite restaurants.

The feature was reportedly spotted in Google Maps for Android version 26.27.00.941319029, where Android Authority found new code strings referencing an “Ask Maps” food ordering feature. While Google has not officially announced the capability, the discovery hints that AI-powered food ordering could be part of a future update.

How Could the AI Feature Work?

Although Google has not shared any details, the leaked strings suggest the company is preparing an introductory prompt that encourages users to try the feature.

The AI could allow users to quickly reorder meals from restaurants they frequently visit or have saved in Google Maps. Instead of manually browsing menus and placing an order, users may simply ask the AI to handle the process.

However, the exact technology behind the feature remains unclear. It is not yet known whether Google will rely on Gemini’s cloud-based AI or use on-device AI capabilities available on supported Android smartphones.

Will AI Complete the Entire Order?

Probably not.

While AI may help users choose restaurants, select items, and prepare an order, payment is still expected to require user approval. Google is unlikely to allow AI to complete financial transactions without explicit confirmation from the account holder.

This approach would add an extra layer of security while keeping users in control of their purchases.

Convenience Comes With Privacy Concerns

The feature could make repeat food orders much faster, especially for people who regularly order from the same restaurants. However, it also raises important privacy questions.

To provide personalized recommendations, Google may need access to users’ order history, spending habits, favorite restaurants, and purchase patterns. That could give the company a much deeper understanding of individual preferences.

There are also security concerns. If someone gains unauthorized access to a user’s Google account, they could potentially place food orders using the AI feature.

Another concern is whether AI might prioritize sponsored listings or highly rated restaurants instead of a user’s preferred choice.

When Will It Launch?

Google has not confirmed the feature or announced a release timeline.

For now, the AI food ordering capability remains under development and was discovered through code hidden inside the latest Google Maps app. As with many in-development features, there is no guarantee it will roll out publicly.

If Google introduces it, the feature could become another step in turning Google Maps into an all-in-one assistant for discovering places, planning trips, and completing everyday tasks.
