The sub-Rs 30,000 smartphone segment has become increasingly competitive, with brands trying to balance performance, battery life, cameras and premium design without pushing prices into flagship territory. Two phones that take noticeably different approaches are the Redmi Note 17 and the Moto Edge 70 Fusion.
Priced at Rs 27,999, the Redmi Note 17 focuses heavily on endurance, offering an enormous 8,000mAh battery, a large AMOLED display and long-term software support. The Moto Edge 70 Fusion, meanwhile, costs Rs 26,999 and takes a more balanced approach with a sharper display, stronger processor, better cameras, faster charging and a more premium design.
So, if you have around Rs 30,000 to spend, which phone makes more sense? Here’s an easy comparison to help you decide.
Display: Bigger screen or sharper screen?
This is one of the closest battles between the two phones. The Redmi Note 17 features a huge 6.9-inch TrueColour AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. It can reach 1,800 nits of peak brightness and also supports 960Hz PWM dimming, DC dimming and TÃœV Rheinland Eye Care certification.
The Moto Edge 70 Fusion, however, offers a 6.78-inch pOLED panel with a sharper 1.5K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and 10-bit colour depth. It also covers the DCI-P3 gamut and has Pantone colour validation. With up to 5,200 nits peak brightness and 1,600 nits high-brightness mode, the specifications look stronger, while the quad-curved edges make the display feel more immersive.
For watching Netflix, YouTube or browsing social media, both screens are excellent. Redmi’s larger panel will appeal to users who prioritise screen size, but Motorola’s higher resolution, smoother refresh rate and colour tuning make it the better overall display.

Software and AI: Redmi has the longer runway
The Moto Edge 70 Fusion runs Android 16 with Hello UI. Motorola keeps the interface relatively clean and close to stock Android, while its motoAI suite brings features across four areas: Create, Capture, Assist and Sense. Tools such as Image Studio and AI-powered assistance add useful functionality without making the interface feel cluttered.
Redmi Note 17 runs Android 16 with HyperOS 3 and has a stronger software commitment. Redmi promises four years of Android updates and six years of security patches, taking support through 2032. HyperOS 3 also introduces features such as HyperIsland, Google’s AI tools, adaptive resource management and an AI engine designed to learn user behaviour.
Motorola promises three Android upgrades and five years of security updates. Its cleaner software may appeal to users who prefer a simpler interface, but Redmi wins on long-term support.

Performance: Motorola wins comfortably
This is where the difference between the two phones becomes much more obvious. The Moto Edge 70 Fusion is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage in our review unit. The phone feels quick during everyday use, with smooth multitasking, fast app switching and reliable thermal management.
The Redmi Note 17 uses the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage in the review configuration. Redmi’s Long-Term Fluency Engine and large 10,416mm² graphite cooling layer help keep everyday performance smooth, but the underlying hardware is considerably less powerful.
The benchmark numbers make the gap difficult to ignore. The Redmi Note 17 scored 943 in Geekbench single-core, 2,307 in multi-core, 444 in GPU and 628,702 on AnTuTu. The Moto Edge 70 Fusion, meanwhile, scored 1,242, 3,454, 3,556 and 1,147,225, respectively.
Gaming further highlights the difference. The Moto Edge 70 Fusion can run BGMI at up to 120fps, while Call of Duty Mobile performs smoothly at high settings. Even Genshin Impact remains playable at around 45-50fps. Redmi can handle BGMI, Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt Legends Unite at moderate settings, but demanding games expose the limitations of its Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, with less stable frame rates during longer sessions.

Camera: Motorola is the safer choice
The Moto Edge 70 Fusion gets a 50MP Sony LYT-710 primary camera with OIS, paired with a 13MP ultra-wide camera that also doubles as a macro shooter. A 32MP front camera handles selfies. Daylight images are detailed, sharp and colour accurate, while Motorola’s Pantone tuning keeps colours natural rather than excessively saturated.
The Redmi Note 17 has a 50MP AI dual-camera system and an 8MP front camera. Its daylight photography is actually quite good, producing natural colours, balanced exposure and respectable dynamic range. The 2x in-sensor zoom is also useful for close-up shots.
Redmi’s Night Mode does a good job of lifting shadows without making every night scene look artificially bright. Portrait shots also offer respectable edge detection and natural background blur. However, the lower-resolution selfie camera is noticeably behind Motorola’s 32MP shooter.
The Motorola’s advantage is consistency. Its Sony sensor, OIS, ultra-wide camera and better selfie hardware make it the more versatile photography phone. Neither is a dedicated camera phone, but if photography is important to you, the Edge 70 Fusion is the safer choice.

Battery: Redmi is the endurance champion
If battery capacity is the deciding factor, there is no contest. The Redmi Note 17 packs an enormous 8,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, making it the largest battery ever seen on a Redmi smartphone. Despite the capacity, Redmi has managed to keep the phone at 8.4mm thick. In everyday use, the phone comfortably lasts beyond a full day even with navigation, streaming, gaming, photography and social media.
The Moto Edge 70 Fusion also has excellent endurance thanks to its 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery. Heavy users can comfortably get through a day, while moderate users can stretch it close to two days. It also supports faster 68W TurboPower charging.
Redmi counters with 45W charging and 22.5W reverse wired charging, which is useful for powering accessories or another phone. The extra 1,000mAh gives Redmi the clear endurance advantage, but Motorola’s faster charging makes it more convenient when you need a quick top-up.

Verdict
At Rs 26,999, the Moto Edge 70 Fusion is the better phone to buy under Rs 30,000. It offers the more complete package with a premium design, stronger durability, sharper 1.5K 144Hz display, significantly better performance, more capable cameras and faster charging. Most importantly, it doesn’t have a major weakness that forces you to compromise in one area to get an advantage in another.
The Redmi Note 17 makes sense only if battery life is your top priority. Its 8,000mAh battery is genuinely impressive, and its software support is longer than Motorola’s. But for the average buyer looking for a phone that can handle gaming, photography, entertainment and everyday tasks equally well, the Moto Edge 70 Fusion offers considerably better value. At Rs 1,000 less than the Redmi, it is also the easier recommendation.
