Meta Ray-Ban vs Oakley HSTN: Which AI Glasses Are Better?

Vertical Share Bar
Ray-Ban Meta vs Meta Oakley HSTN

News in Short

  • Ray-Ban Meta vs Meta Oakley HSTN: Both smart glasses offer the same Meta AI, camera and audio experience, but they cater to different users.
  • Ray-Ban Meta is better suited for everyday wear and casual users.
  • Meta Oakley HSTN is designed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts with a more secure, sport-focused fit.
  • Your choice ultimately depends on your lifestyle rather than the technology, as both share nearly identical hardware and AI capabilities.

Meta has quietly built the most mature smart glasses ecosystem on the market. After using both the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2) and the newer Meta Oakley HSTN, one thing became clear—these aren’t competing products. Instead, they’re designed for two different types of users.

On paper, they share almost everything. Both feature Meta AI, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers, five microphones, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6, 32GB storage and up to eight hours of battery life.

The real difference lies in how—and where—you’ll wear them.

Design: Lifestyle vs Performance

This is the biggest differentiator.

The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer follows one of the most iconic eyewear designs ever made. It blends into everyday life and looks like a regular pair of sunglasses. Whether you’re at work, travelling or meeting friends, nobody thinks you’re wearing smart glasses.

The Meta Oakley HSTN takes the opposite approach.

Its sporty frame, straight temple arms and secure fit make it far better for running, cycling, hiking and gym sessions. During my testing, the HSTN stayed firmly in place even while moving, whereas the Ray-Ban occasionally needed a slight adjustment.

Winner: Oakley HSTN for active users, Ray-Ban Meta for everyone else.

Camera: Almost Identical

Don’t buy the Oakley expecting a better camera.

Both glasses feature the same 12MP ultra-wide sensor capable of capturing 3K video and detailed still images. Daylight performance is excellent on both, while low-light photography remains their biggest weakness.

Video stabilisation is equally impressive, and both deliver that immersive first-person perspective smartphones simply cannot.

Unless you’re comparing the footage side by side, you won’t notice any meaningful difference.

Winner: Tie.

Meta AI: No Difference

Whether you buy Ray-Ban or Oakley, you’re getting the exact same Meta AI experience.

Both can:

  • Answer questions
  • Recognise objects and landmarks
  • Read WhatsApp messages
  • Send replies
  • Identify songs through Shazam
  • Set reminders
  • Capture photos using voice commands

Performance is equally fast and reliable on both models.

Winner: Tie.

Audio and Calls

Again, both perform almost identically.

Music sounds surprisingly rich despite the open-ear speakers. Calls remain clear thanks to the five-microphone array, and voice isolation works remarkably well outdoors.

Like every open-ear design, both leak some sound at higher volumes and struggle slightly in noisy environments.

For daily commuting and casual listening, however, they’re excellent.

Winner: Tie.

Battery Life

Meta claims up to eight hours of usage on both glasses, and my experience closely matched those figures.

Both also include charging cases capable of extending battery life to roughly two days before requiring a recharge.

Winner: Tie.

Comfort

This category depends entirely on your lifestyle.

If you’re walking, commuting or spending long hours indoors, the Ray-Ban feels lighter and more natural.

However, if you’re constantly moving, cycling or exercising, the Oakley’s secure fit makes a noticeable difference.

Personally, I found myself reaching for the Oakley during workouts and the Ray-Ban for everything else.

Winner: Depends on your lifestyle.

Price

The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2) is the more affordable option, while the Meta Oakley HSTN commands a premium for its athletic design and Oakley branding. The underlying smart features remain largely the same, making design and intended use the biggest justification for the price difference.

Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?

After using both, my recommendation is surprisingly simple.

Buy the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2) if you want one pair of smart glasses for everyday life. They’re stylish, discreet and offer every Meta AI feature most people will ever need.

Choose the Meta Oakley HSTN if your lifestyle revolves around cycling, running, hiking, travelling or outdoor adventures. The secure fit alone makes it the better option for active users.

The reality is that Meta hasn’t built two completely different products. It has built the same smart glasses for two different audiences.

That’s why neither is objectively “better.” The best Meta smart glasses are simply the ones that fit your lifestyle.
