Apple has revealed a fresh wave of accessibility features powered by Apple Intelligence, and the update goes beyond simple convenience tools. Ahead of its annual developer event, the company introduced AI-powered upgrades across VoiceOver, Live Recognition, captions, voice control, and Vision Pro experiences. These features are expected to arrive later this year and could become part of iOS 27.
This latest Apple announcement places accessibility and AI at the center of its software strategy. More importantly, it signals that Apple is expanding AI beyond chatbots and productivity features into tools designed for everyday use.
How is Apple making VoiceOver smarter?
Apple is upgrading VoiceOver with more advanced image understanding. The feature can now analyze and describe visual content with much greater context.
For example, if a user points their device at a bill, VoiceOver can read details such as payment amount and due date. It can also better explain photos and identify information inside personal documents.
That means Apple devices may now offer richer descriptions instead of simple object labels. Users with visual impairments could receive more contextual information from everyday content.
What changes are coming to Live Recognition and Magnifier?
Apple also upgraded Live Recognition. Users can now use an iPhone camera to identify objects and scenes around them while asking follow-up questions for extra details.
Meanwhile, Magnifier gains more flexibility. Users with low vision can assign it to the Action Button and access a high-contrast interface instantly.
Voice controls are also getting smarter. Instead of rigid commands, users can now describe actions naturally. For instance, users inside Maps can say “tap the guide about best restaurants.” In Files, they can say “tap the purple folder.”
Brings AI to reading and document accessibility
Apple is also redesigning its Reader experience. The updated feature can process more complicated documents, including scientific papers filled with multiple columns, images, and tables.
Users can generate AI-powered summaries and listen to text in its original language. Apple says the system also preserves fonts and colors while adapting content for users with dyslexia and low vision.
As AI tools continue appearing across operating systems, document accessibility is becoming a larger focus area.
Can Apple now generate captions for any video?
One of the most notable additions is AI-generated subtitles.
Apple says it can automatically create captions for videos that do not already include them. This works with videos recorded on iPhones and even clips shared by friends or family.
The feature will work across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro devices. Users can also customize how captions appear.
As a result, videos that previously lacked accessibility support could become easier to understand.
Vision Pro may unlock hands-free wheelchair control
The company also introduced a new Vision Pro initiative focused on mobility.
The company says users will be able to control compatible wheelchairs using eye movements. According to Apple, the feature works across different lighting conditions and does not require recalibration.
At launch in the U.S., compatibility will begin with Tolt and LUCI alternative drive systems and support Bluetooth as well as wired accessories.
The company also confirmed that Name Recognition now supports 50 languages. In addition, tvOS will gain large text support and Made for iPhone hearing aids will improve device handoff.
As Apple prepares for iOS 27, accessibility appears to be moving from a support feature to a headline technology category. With these updates, Apple is placing AI inside practical tools designed to reshape everyday interactions.
