Gemini Learns Who You Are: Google Introduces Personal Intelligence

Google Introduces Personal Intelligence in Gemini

Google has rolled out a new feature for Gemini, aiming to solve one of the biggest frustrations with AI chatbots. Forgetting user preferences and losing context in long conversations. The feature, called Personal Intelligence, focuses on memory, relevance, and consistency.

The update is currently available to paying subscribers in the US. However, it signals Google’s larger push to make Gemini feel less like a generic chatbot and more like a personalised digital assistant.

Why Personal Intelligence Matters

Most AI chatbots struggle with long conversations. Over time, responses become less accurate and context starts to fade. Personal Intelligence directly tackles this issue by helping Gemini remember information that matters to the user.

For example, instead of guessing answers to personal questions, Gemini can now rely on actual context pulled from connected Google services. As a result, responses become more relevant and less random.

Google explained that the goal is to make Gemini feel consistent across chats and better suited for long-term projects.

How Gemini Uses Your Data

Personal Intelligence works through retrieval-augmented generation, also known as RAG. Instead of storing memories like a human, Gemini fetches relevant information from connected apps when needed.

Users can link Gemini with Google services such as Gmail, Drive, Photos, and Calendar. Earlier, this integration helped with tasks like drafting emails or finding files. Now, it also helps Gemini understand routines, preferences, and context.

Importantly, the feature stays off by default. Users can enable it from the “For you” section in the Gemini app and disable it anytime from Settings under Connected apps.

Transparency and User Control

Google says Gemini will clearly reference the source of any personalised information it uses. If the source is not shown, users can request more details instantly.

Users can also switch to temporary chats or regenerate responses without personalisation. This ensures full control over how much context Gemini uses.

Google also clarified that Gemini will not make assumptions about sensitive data, such as health information, unless the user explicitly asks.

Privacy Safeguards Explained

Privacy remains a key focus. Google confirmed that data pulled from connected apps will not be used to train Gemini’s AI models. The company also emphasised that Personal Intelligence only activates with user permission.

With this update, Google is positioning Gemini as a more reliable and context-aware AI assistant while keeping transparency and user choice at the center.
