Ask Gmail: Google Unveils AI Inbox To Dig Information From Emails For You

Gmail’s New AI Inbox Puts Tasks First

Google is rethinking how people manage email. The company has unveiled a new AI Inbox for Gmail, designed to cut through clutter and highlight what truly matters.

The AI Inbox introduces a dedicated tab with two clear sections. The first, Suggested to-dos, surfaces emails that need action. This may include upcoming bills, appointment reminders, or follow-ups that often get buried in crowded inboxes.

The second section, Topics to catch up on, groups updates into categories like purchases and finances. Delivery confirmations, refunds, and account statements appear as quick summaries instead of long email threads. The goal is simple. Reduce scanning. Increase clarity.

Google says the traditional inbox is staying. Users can toggle the AI view on or off at any time. The AI Inbox is rolling out first to trusted testers, with wider availability expected in the coming months.

AI Overviews Transform Gmail Search

Gmail search is also getting a major upgrade. With AI Overviews, users can now ask questions in plain language instead of relying on keywords.

A query like “Who sent me a plumbing quote last year?” instantly returns a summarized answer pulled from relevant emails. The system scans your inbox and highlights key details at the top of results.

This feature mirrors AI Overviews in Google Search but works only within your email data. Google confirms the model does not pull information from external sources. AI Overviews in Gmail search are rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Proofread Brings Writing Assistance Inside Gmail

Google is also introducing Proofread, a built-in writing assistant for Gmail. The feature analyzes drafts and offers one-click suggestions to improve clarity, tone, and structure.

It helps with word choice, shortens complex sentences, and promotes active voice. It also flags common errors, such as incorrect word usage. Proofread works similarly to popular tools like Grammarly but stays entirely within Gmail.

The Proofread feature is launching for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Popular AI Features Expand to Free Users

Alongside these launches, Google announced that several AI tools are now coming to all Gmail users. These include Help Me Write, AI Overviews for email threads, and Suggested Replies.

These features aim to simplify writing, summarize long conversations, and offer context-aware responses. Google says all AI features remain optional and personal data is not used to train foundational models.
