Facebook Going Back to Matchmaking Roots with AI Dating Assistant?

Facebook Dating Registers 10% YoY Rise in Young Adult Matches

Meta announced a new AI assistant for Facebook Dating. The chatbot is designed to help users find more tailored matches. People can ask the AI for specific suggestions such as “a Brooklyn girl in tech.” It can also refine user profiles to improve their chances of connecting.

Meet Cute: A New Way to Connect

Meta is also introducing a feature called Meet Cute. This gives users a weekly “surprise match.” The goal is to reduce swipe fatigue, a common issue on dating apps. The company believes these AI-driven experiences will make dating on Facebook feel more natural and less repetitive.

Young Users Driving Growth

Facebook Dating is seeing stronger interest from young adults. Meta says matches among users aged 18 to 29 have grown 10% year-over-year. Hundreds of thousands in this age group create new profiles each month. However, the numbers are still small compared to rivals like Tinder, which has about 50 million daily active users, and Hinge, which has around 10 million.

AI Becomes Standard in Dating Apps

AI-powered tools are no longer unique. Tinder already uses AI to pick profile photos. Hinge helps users refine their profile responses with AI. Bumble has added features to screen images and even hinted at future “AI concierges” that could interact on users’ behalf.

Competition with Match Group

Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid, partnered with OpenAI last year. The company invested over $20 million in AI tools despite financial struggles. Its stock price has dropped 68% in the past five years. Still, Match has launched AI-driven tools across its platforms, aiming to retain users and stay competitive.

Facebook’s Move Feels Familiar

Facebook started as a platform to connect people, often through social matchmaking. By adding AI dating tools today, Meta seems to be circling back to its earliest roots—helping people connect in more personal ways, but this time powered by artificial intelligence.
