Google Pay is expanding beyond payments with Discover Shop, a fashion and lifestyle shopping experience now being piloted in India. The feature brings AI-assisted discovery, virtual try-on and image-based product search into the payments app. Its usefulness will depend on whether it helps people find relevant products faster, rather than simply adding another shopping feed.

How useful is Discover Shop in everyday shopping?

Discover Shop is designed for people who browse fashion without always knowing what they want to buy. Its personalised feed can surface products and trends based on preferences and activity across Google services. Google says recommendations may use consented Web and App Activity and Search Personalisation data. That can make discovery more relevant, but it also means personalisation settings and user consent matter.

The most practical feature may be visual search. A shopper can take a picture of an outfit or upload an existing image, then look for similar products across the web. This could help when someone spots a style they like but does not know its name or brand. It may also reduce the effort of describing an item through text searches.

Virtual try-on offers another useful step. From supported product pages, users can preview how selected clothing items might look and drape on them. It could help narrow down choices before opening a retailer’s website. However, a virtual preview cannot fully reproduce fabric feel, fit, sizing differences or how a garment moves in real life. Shoppers should still check size charts, return policies and product details before ordering.

What Discover Shop does—and what it does not

Google says Discover Shop draws on its Shopping Graph, which contains more than 60 billion products. The feed also incorporates YouTube videos, adding creator content and styling inspiration alongside product discovery. Google plans to introduce pre-generated daily outfit suggestions in a future update.

Discover Shop is not described as a new checkout system. Users who choose a product can view details such as colour, size and format, then visit the merchant’s website to place an order. In practice, this makes the feature a discovery layer rather than a complete shopping destination. The final buying experience, payment options and after-sales support remain with the retailer.

For shoppers, the potential benefit is convenience: inspiration, image search and a quick preview sit in an app they may already use. The trade-off is that recommendations rely on activity data, while try-on is limited to supported items. People who prefer a focused search or do not want shopping suggestions linked to their Google activity may find the feed less useful.

Availability in India

Discover Shop is currently part of a limited pilot in India. Google has not announced a broader rollout date. Its usefulness for most users will become clearer once the company expands access and shoppers can test the range of products, quality of recommendations and accuracy of virtual try-on.

For now, Discover Shop looks most promising as a way to turn fashion inspiration into product discovery. It may save time when searching for a look, but it should support—not replace—careful checks before purchase. Google’s new experience puts visual discovery and AI try-on inside Google Pay, while the company’s announcement explains how the pilot works.
