WhatsApp is making group conversations easier to manage with four new features. The Meta-owned messaging platform is introducing permanent message pins, chat history sharing, mention filters and group-specific Status updates.
The updates aim to help users follow ongoing conversations without missing important information. They also make it easier for people joining an existing group to catch up on discussions.
WhatsApp announced the features in a blog post on Thursday. The company says they will help group members pick up conversations from where they left off.
WhatsApp now lets users pin messages forever
One of the biggest additions is the ability to pin messages indefinitely. Until now, WhatsApp allowed users to pin up to four messages in a group chat. These pins could remain visible for 24 hours, seven days or 30 days.
With the new option, users can keep important messages pinned forever. This could prove useful for groups that regularly share schedules, event details, addresses or important announcements.
WhatsApp is also making it easier for new members to understand ongoing conversations. Group admins and managers can now share recent message history after someone joins a group.
They can do this by tapping the name of a recently added member. This option also helps when admins forget to share chat history during the initial addition process.
WhatsApp says the shared messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
Mention filters and group-specific Status updates arrive
The third addition focuses on finding relevant messages faster. WhatsApp is introducing a filter that highlights messages in which a user has been mentioned.
This should help members locate conversations that directly involve them. It could be particularly useful in large groups where messages arrive frequently.
The fourth feature brings group-specific Status updates. Users can now share a Status directly with selected group chats.
These updates work like regular WhatsApp Status posts. They disappear after 24 hours, and other group members can react or share their own Status updates.
This gives groups a more focused way to share temporary photos and videos without sending them to a wider Status audience.
WhatsApp continues to expand group chat features
The latest additions follow WhatsApp’s recent introduction of Guest Calls. That feature allows users to invite people who do not have a WhatsApp account to join calls.
Together, these updates show WhatsApp’s continued focus on making group conversations more useful. Permanent pins can keep important information accessible, while chat history sharing can reduce confusion for new members.
The mention filter and group-specific Status updates also add more ways to manage busy conversations.
WhatsApp has not specified a complete rollout timeline for all four features. Users may receive the additions gradually as the update reaches their accounts.
