OpenAI is making it easier for ChatGPT users to understand and manage privacy settings. The company has started rolling out a new Privacy Center. It brings information about several privacy-related features into one place.
The Privacy Center will appear for signed-in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business users. It is rolling out on the web, iOS and Android apps. However, users may not see it immediately. OpenAI says availability can vary by plan, region, account and workspace settings.
What Does the ChatGPT Privacy Center Offer?
The new Privacy Center groups privacy-related features into three sections. These include Personalised chats and ads, Chat privacy, and Data use and access.
The first section focuses on features that can affect how ChatGPT personalises the experience. It includes information about Memory, personalised ads and location for eligible users.
Importantly, OpenAI notes that deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from that conversation. The Chat privacy section provides information about Temporary Chat. It also gives users an option to start a Temporary Chat.
Meanwhile, Data use and access covers areas such as apps, plugins, model improvement, and options to export or delete data.
Privacy Controls Are Still in Settings
The Privacy Center does not replace the existing privacy controls in ChatGPT Settings. Instead, OpenAI describes it as a way to explain what different controls do. It also provides direct links to the relevant settings.
This could make it easier for users to find privacy options without searching through different menus. Opening the Privacy Center also does not automatically change any privacy settings.
It does not delete conversations or other data. It also does not override an organisation’s policies.
How to Open Privacy Center on ChatGPT
The steps vary slightly depending on the device. On the web, open the account menu, select Help, and then choose Privacy Center.
On iPhone, open Settings and select Privacy Center. Android users can follow the same path through Settings. On desktop, the Privacy Center can also be accessed through the Help menu.
Who Can Access the New Feature?
The rollout covers signed-in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business accounts. OpenAI is also bringing the feature to its iOS and Android apps.
However, the rollout does not include ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare accounts. The feature is rolling out gradually. Therefore, eligible users may have to wait before it appears on their account.
What the Privacy Center Means for ChatGPT Users
The new Privacy Center does not introduce a completely separate set of privacy controls.
Instead, it creates a central place to understand existing privacy features and reach their settings.
For regular ChatGPT users, this could make privacy management easier. It also gives users a clearer view of areas such as Memory, Temporary Chat, data use and personalised experiences.
OpenAI’s new approach comes as ChatGPT continues to add more personalised features and connected services. Having these controls easier to find gives users more visibility over how those features work.
