Amazon has finally brought Alexa+ to India, eight years after the original Alexa made its debut in the country. The upgraded voice assistant is available for free to users in India from today.
Alexa+ brings more natural conversations, contextual understanding and agentic capabilities. It can also control compatible smart home devices and help users complete tasks across supported services.
Alexa+ comes to India with Hindi and Hinglish support
Amazon has launched Alexa+ in India as its first international expansion of the AI-powered assistant. The launch comes eight years after the original Alexa arrived in the country.
Unlike the earlier Alexa experience, Alexa+ is designed around more conversational interactions. Users can continue a conversation without repeating information from previous requests.
The assistant can also remember certain details shared by users. Amazon says this can include preferences and important information that helps Alexa+ personalise future interactions.
This moves Alexa beyond simple voice commands. Instead, Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as an assistant that can understand the context behind a series of requests and help complete tasks.
Language support is another important part of the India launch. Alexa+ can understand and respond in both Hindi and Hinglish. Amazon has also confirmed that more languages will be added soon.
Alexa+ gets Amazon Now integration in India
Amazon is also bringing an India-specific integration to Alexa+. India is the first market where Alexa+ and Amazon Now are being brought together.
The integration allows users to ask Alexa+ for products while continuing a conversation. The assistant can then add the requested items to the Amazon Now cart.
There is an important step before the purchase, though. Alexa+ will not automatically place the order.
Users must provide voice confirmation before the order is completed. This gives users a final opportunity to review the request before making a purchase.
For example, a user can continue adding items through a conversation instead of issuing separate commands for every product. Alexa+ can follow the context and update the Amazon Now cart accordingly.
Alexa+ can control smart home devices and complete tasks
Amazon is also expanding Alexa’s capabilities beyond answering questions.
Alexa+ can control compatible smart home appliances and help users complete tasks through supported services. The assistant is designed to handle more complex requests rather than simply respond to individual commands.
This is where Amazon’s agentic approach becomes important. Instead of only providing information, Alexa+ can take actions based on what the user asks it to do.
Amazon’s newer Fire TV and Echo devices also ship with Alexa+ out of the box. This means the upgraded assistant is being integrated into the company’s latest consumer hardware rather than remaining limited to a standalone software experience.
Alexa+ is free for users in India
Alexa+ is available for free to everyone in India during its early-access phase. Amazon says users do not need a subscription to access the upgraded assistant during this period.
After early access ends, Prime members will continue to get Alexa+ at no additional cost.
The India launch therefore gives Amazon an opportunity to put its generative AI assistant in front of a much larger audience without making a separate subscription an immediate requirement.
For Indian users, Hindi and Hinglish support could also make Alexa+ more useful in everyday conversations. Combined with smart home controls and Amazon Now integration, the assistant is moving closer to becoming a task-oriented voice companion rather than just a question-answering tool.
