The premium Android smartwatch segment now has two compelling options: the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and the Google Pixel Watch 5. There is also a noticeable difference in their prices. The Galaxy Watch 9 starts at Rs. 37,999, while the Pixel Watch 5 starts at Rs. 42,900 for the 41mm model and goes up to Rs. 45,900 for the 45mm model.
That makes the Pixel Watch 5 at least Rs. 4,901 more expensive than Samsung’s entry-level option. However, price alone does not tell the complete story.
Samsung has put more emphasis on health and fitness insights with the Galaxy Watch 9. Google, meanwhile, has focused on battery life, Gemini and making the Pixel Watch feel more independent from the phone.
So, which one should you buy?
After looking at both watches across design, display, software, health tracking and battery life, the answer depends heavily on what you want from a smartwatch.
Design: Samsung is practical, Google is distinctive
The Galaxy Watch 9 and Pixel Watch 5 take very different approaches to design.
Samsung sticks with a familiar circular smartwatch design and a cushion-shaped bezel. It does not look dramatically different from its predecessors, but that is not necessarily a problem. The watch feels clean and understated rather than overly sporty.
The dynamic lug system also improves the fit. Samsung’s newer bands use air pockets, which make them feel lighter during extended wear. This becomes particularly useful if you plan to wear the watch while sleeping or exercising.
The Galaxy Watch 9 also has IP68, 5ATM and MIL-STD-810H certifications.
Google takes a more distinctive approach. The Pixel Watch 5 retains its rounded case, prominent crown and domed glass. The result is a watch that looks more like a piece of jewellery than a traditional fitness-focused smartwatch.
It is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes and uses 100 percent recycled aluminium for the case. It also carries an IP68 rating.
There is one important difference, though. The Galaxy Watch 9 gets sapphire crystal protection, while the Pixel Watch 5 does not. If scratch resistance is a priority, Samsung has the advantage.
Winner: Galaxy Watch 9 for durability, Pixel Watch 5 for design appeal.
Display: Both are bright enough
Samsung offers Super AMOLED displays in 40mm and 44mm sizes. The smaller model gets a 1.34-inch screen, while the larger version has a 1.47-inch panel.
The display can reach up to 3,000 nits, and outdoor visibility is excellent. Text remains clear and colours look vibrant.
The Pixel Watch 5 also reaches up to 3,000 nits. Its 1.4-inch LTPO AMOLED Actua 360 display has a resolution of 456 x 456 pixels and 320ppi density.
The LTPO technology allows the refresh rate to drop as low as 1Hz when required. That helps the watch conserve power, particularly when using the Always-On Display.
I prefer the Pixel’s curved display for its visual character, but Samsung’s flatter approach feels more practical for everyday use.

Health and fitness: Samsung has the broader package
This is where the Galaxy Watch 9 makes its strongest case.
Samsung tracks heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, skin temperature and body composition. It also supports ECG and blood-pressure monitoring in supported markets.
Sleep tracking includes measurements such as sleep duration, REM sleep, deep sleep and time awake. The watch also monitors factors such as blood oxygen, respiratory rate and skin temperature.
Samsung then uses this data for features such as Sleep Coach.
However, the experience is not flawless. There can be occasional gaps in sleep data. Stress tracking also requires users to manually start a measurement instead of providing continuous automatic tracking.
The Pixel Watch 5 has made improvements of its own. Google says sleep tracking is now 15 percent more accurate, while GPS accuracy is another area that has improved.
Smart Wake is also useful. It uses movement and heart-rate information to wake you during a lighter sleep phase within a 30-minute window around your alarm.
However, Samsung currently offers a wider range of health and fitness insights.
The Galaxy Watch 9’s Fitness Index combines factors such as body composition, cardio, endurance, flexibility and strength. Cardio Load provides additional context around workout intensity, while Heart Health Score brings several health indicators together.
Google has confirmed additional features such as blood-pressure trends and insulin-resistance trends, but these are not available at the moment.
Winner: Galaxy Watch 9
Fitness tracking: Samsung gives you more context
Both watches can track workouts, but Samsung’s approach feels more detailed.
The Galaxy Watch 9 can automatically detect several activities, including walking and workouts. However, strength training still needs to be started manually, and there can be moments when heart-rate tracking during workouts is inconsistent.
The bigger advantage is what Samsung does with the data afterward.
Fitness Index and Cardio Load make the Watch 9 more useful for someone who wants to understand training intensity rather than simply count steps and calories.
The Pixel Watch 5 has good GPS accuracy and useful sleep features, but its automatic workout detection is not perfect either. There were instances where walking was not detected automatically.
For someone who takes fitness seriously, Samsung currently offers the more complete package.
Winner: Galaxy Watch 9
Software and AI: Pixel Watch 5 has the smarter twist
Both watches run Wear OS, but their software experiences feel different.
The Galaxy Watch 9 combines Wear OS with Samsung’s ecosystem and provides access to apps such as Google Maps, Google Wallet, Gmail and Spotify. Samsung also adds its own health and fitness features on top.
The Pixel Watch 5 takes a more Google-centric approach.
One of its biggest additions is Gemini. Basic Gemini commands can work directly on the watch without requiring the phone, an internet connection or Bluetooth connection in supported situations.
You can use Gemini for tasks such as setting timers, starting workouts, opening apps, controlling music and changing settings.
The raise-to-talk feature also makes interactions feel more natural. Instead of using a wake word, you can raise the watch towards your mouth and begin speaking.
Google’s Proactive Suggestions are another interesting addition. They can use information from Gmail, Messages and Calendar to surface relevant information.
There is a catch. Some of these features require newer Pixel smartphones.
For users who want a smartwatch that leans heavily into Google’s AI ecosystem, the Pixel Watch 5 has the edge.
Winner: Pixel Watch 5
Performance: Both are smooth
Samsung uses the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage.
In everyday use, the Galaxy Watch 9 feels responsive. Apps open quickly, menus are fluid and switching between watch faces, Tiles and apps does not feel sluggish.
The Pixel Watch 5 uses the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip with a Cortex-M55 co-processor. It also feels responsive during regular use.
Neither watch has a major performance problem. The difference is more about what the respective platforms do with that hardware.

Battery: Pixel Watch 5 wins by a big margin
This is the biggest difference between the two watches.
The Galaxy Watch 9’s 40mm model has a 390mAh battery, while the 44mm model gets a 445mAh cell. With Always-On Display enabled, the 44mm version can remain close to a day of use.
That means charging becomes a regular part of the experience.
The Pixel Watch 5 changes that equation significantly.
The 41mm model has a 332mAh battery and is rated for up to 30 hours. In testing with Always-On Display switched off, battery life reached around two-and-a-half to three days between charges.
That is a substantial advantage over the Galaxy Watch 9.
Charging is also quick enough. The Pixel Watch 5 can reach around 50 percent in 15 minutes, with a full charge taking approximately an hour. Its Quick Charge Dock also displays useful information while charging.
Winner: Pixel Watch 5

Which smartwatch should you buy?
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 is the better choice if your priority is health and fitness tracking. It gives you more health measurements and, more importantly, adds context through Fitness Index, Cardio Load and Heart Health Score.
It is also cheaper at Rs. 37,999, which makes the value proposition stronger.
The Google Pixel Watch 5, however, makes a strong argument for spending more. Its biggest advantage is battery life. Getting two-and-a-half to three days in the review with Always-On Display disabled is a major improvement over Samsung’s roughly one-day experience with AOD enabled.
Google’s on-device Gemini is another reason to consider it. The watch feels more independent and integrates naturally with Google’s services.
There are compromises on both sides. Samsung’s sleep tracking can occasionally miss data, while some of its advanced health features work best with a Samsung phone. The Pixel Watch 5 lacks sapphire crystal and its automatic workout detection is not always reliable. Some of Google’s upcoming health features are also not available yet.
My pick
Buy the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 if you want the better health and fitness smartwatch.
Buy the Google Pixel Watch 5 if battery life, Gemini and the Google ecosystem matter more to you.
At their current prices, Samsung is the better value for most Android users, while the Pixel Watch 5 is the more appealing option for someone already invested in Google’s ecosystem and willing to pay extra for better endurance.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch 9 and Pixel Watch 5 are not trying to win in exactly the same way.
Samsung has built a smartwatch around health data and fitness insights. Google has focused on AI, independence and battery life.
At Rs. 37,999, the Galaxy Watch 9 is also the cheaper option. Its broader health tracking makes it the stronger recommendation for fitness-focused users.
The Pixel Watch 5 costs more, but its dramatically better battery experience changes how convenient it is to live with. Gemini also gives Google’s watch a more intelligent feel.
