News in Short

  • Apple Maps Transit is now reportedly available in India, although Apple has not officially announced the rollout.
  • Users can get public transport directions, including departure and arrival times and connections.
  • Maps can show nearby departures and major transit lines for supported services.
  • Transit also supports features such as service disruption information, trip planning and alerts in supported regions.
  • India is currently not listed on Apple’s official Transit availability page.

Apple appears to have quietly enabled its Transit feature in Apple Maps in India, giving iPhone users access to public transport information directly through the Maps app. The rollout has not been officially announced by Apple, but the feature has been independently verified as available in the country.

The addition could make Apple Maps more useful for commuters who rely on public transportation, as Transit is designed to provide information beyond basic road navigation.

Apple Maps Transit Now Available in India

Apple Maps Transit provides users with public transport directions for supported services. Depending on the available data, users can see departure and arrival times, connections and fare information.

The feature was first spotted by MacRumors contributing researcher Aaron Perris, after which its availability in India was independently verified.

However, Apple has yet to officially announce the rollout. India also remains absent from Apple’s public list of regions where Apple Maps Transit is supported.

What Users Can Do With Apple Maps Transit

With Transit enabled, users can plan journeys using public transport and check the available connections for their route.

Apple Maps can display departure information, allowing users to see when supported buses or trains are expected to leave. The app can also show nearby departures and major transit lines through its dedicated transit features.

In supported regions, the maps can provide additional information such as service disruptions and real-time locations of buses and trains. Users can also receive alerts when they are approaching their stop.

Another useful option is the ability to plan a journey around a specific departure or arrival time. Frequently used transit lines can also be pinned for quicker access.

Dedicated Transit Map Mode

Apple Maps also offers a dedicated Transit map mode, which highlights major public transport lines.

For users who regularly commute using buses or trains, this can make it easier to understand available routes without switching between different apps for navigation and transit information.

However, the exact availability of individual transit operators and the level of information provided can vary depending on the local data Apple Maps has access to.

Transit Payments Depend on the Region

The map can also support transit payments in certain regions and with select transport systems.

Depending on the local system, users may be able to pay through Apple Pay, add a compatible transit card to Apple Wallet or use the transport operator’s own app.

It is not yet clear which, if any, of these payment-related features are available as part of the India rollout.

Apple Has Not Officially Announced the India Rollout

While the feature is reportedly working in India, Apple has not yet added the country to its official Transit availability list.

This means the current rollout could still be subject to changes as Apple expands or finalises its transit coverage.

The arrival of Transit follows other recent Apple Maps additions, including an enhanced Flyover experience and Local Lists in select markets.

For Indian users, however, the biggest change is that the map is now beginning to offer a more complete public transport navigation experience, rather than focusing primarily on road-based directions.
