Motorola has detailed the features coming to its smartphones with the Android 17 update, including some additions that users have been waiting for. The update will finally bring native support for themed icons to Motorola phones, alongside stackable widgets and several notification improvements.

Motorola Android 17 Update: What’s New
One of the biggest additions is themed icons, which will let users coordinate app icons with their overall phone theme. Motorola will add a dedicated Themed icons option under Home settings.
The update will also introduce stackable widgets. Users can combine multiple widgets into a single block on the home screen and swipe through them instead of placing each widget separately.
Motorola is also adding an option to hide labels from Quick Settings tiles when users choose the Classic style. This should free up some screen space for people who already recognise the icons.
Android 17 Brings New Notification Features
Motorola’s Android 17 update will bring several changes to notifications. Live Updates will allow supported apps to continuously update a single notification with real-time information instead of sending multiple alerts.
The update will also add notification summaries. Users can quickly view a one-sentence summary of lengthy group chats or rapid-fire conversations in messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Messages.
Furthermore, Motorola will use machine learning to organise notifications. The phone will separate personal messages from lower-priority automated alerts and move the latter into quieter folders under the Silent section.
New HDR and Sharing Controls
Android 17 will also give Motorola users greater control over Enhanced HDR brightness. When the phone displays HDR content, it can automatically increase the screen brightness to make highlights more visible.
With the new setting, users can reduce the intensity of Enhanced HDR brightness or disable it completely so HDR photos and videos play at normal brightness.
Motorola is also adding new sharing options under Connected devices. Tap to Share will let users share a photo or file with another person by placing their phones together. Meanwhile, Quick Drop will allow users to send photos or files to a reusable group of people at the same time.
Android 17 Also Brings Security and Performance Improvements
Beyond the visible changes, Motorola says the Android 17 update will bring enhanced security and protection against threats such as malware, phishing and data breaches.
The update should also improve app compatibility as newer applications increasingly require recent Android versions. Motorola lists performance and stability improvements among the other benefits, including operating-system optimisation that could result in smoother performance and, in some cases, better battery life.
When Will Motorola Phones Get Android 17?
Motorola has not announced a specific rollout timeline for Android 17. The company’s latest flagship devices, including the Razr foldables, Razr Fold and Motorola Signature in international markets, are expected to be among the first devices in line, while Moto G, Edge and other series could follow later.
