Cursor is doubling down on India with the launch of its first country-specific AI coding subscription. The company has introduced Cursor Start, a ₹649-per-month plan tailored for Indian developers, making it the startup’s biggest localization effort yet. The announcement comes just weeks before Cursor is expected to complete its acquisition by SpaceX, highlighting India’s growing importance in the global AI developer ecosystem.

The lower-priced plan reflects Cursor’s strategy to attract more developers in one of the world’s fastest-growing software markets while expanding its presence beyond startups and individual users.

Why Is Cursor Launching an India-Only Subscription?

Cursor says India is now its third-largest market globally and has become its fastest-growing developer community. According to the company, its user base in India has more than tripled over the past year, making the country the first market where it decided to introduce localized pricing.

The ₹649 Cursor Start subscription is designed to make AI-assisted coding more accessible without offering every premium feature available in the global Pro plan.

Simon Green, Cursor’s Head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, said India’s deep software engineering talent and rapidly growing AI ecosystem made the country a natural choice for localized pricing.

The subscription is billed in Indian rupees and supports payments through credit cards, debit cards, and UPI, making it easier for local developers to subscribe.

What Does Cursor Start Include?

The new Cursor Start plan offers developers access to Cursor’s Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, along with higher usage limits than the free version.

Subscribers also get access to cloud agents, the Cursor iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, hooks, and skills.

However, the India-specific subscription does not replace the flagship Pro plan. It excludes access to advanced AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as premium features such as Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK.

According to the company, the plan is intended for developers who need more AI coding assistance than the free tier but do not require enterprise-level capabilities.

How Big Is Cursor’s India Expansion?

Cursor is investing beyond pricing. The company has already hired its first salesperson in India and plans to strengthen its presence with additional leadership roles in Delhi.

It is also expanding technical support teams and building a government affairs function while increasing its footprint across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

The company believes sectors such as banking, enterprises, startups, and universities present significant growth opportunities as AI-assisted software development gains momentum.

GitHub recently reported that India now has more than 27 million developers on its platform, second only to the United States, reinforcing the country’s importance in the global software ecosystem.

What Does the SpaceX Acquisition Mean for Cursor?

Cursor’s India expansion comes shortly before its expected acquisition by SpaceX in an all-stock deal reportedly valued at $60 billion.

The company says it will continue operating independently until the transaction closes. However, once the acquisition is complete, Cursor expects SpaceX’s existing presence in India through Starlink could help accelerate commercial expansion and reduce operational barriers.

For now, Cursor says its India strategy was already underway before the acquisition announcement. With localized pricing, new hiring, and a growing developer base, Cursor is positioning India as a central market in its long-term global growth strategy ahead of its next chapter under SpaceX.
