Google is giving Gmail users more control over AI-generated emails by upgrading its Gemini-powered Help Me Write feature. Instead of relying only on preset editing options, users can now provide custom instructions to refine email drafts exactly as they want.
The update also introduces undo and redo controls for AI-generated changes, making it easier to experiment with edits before sending an email. Google says the rollout has begun and should reach eligible users by July 20.
What’s new in Gmail’s Help Me Write?
The biggest addition is support for custom editing prompts. After Gemini creates an email draft, users can type specific instructions describing how they want the message to change.
For example, users can ask Gmail to add missing details, include a deadline, clarify a paragraph, or rewrite a section in a different style. Gemini then updates the draft based on those instructions instead of applying a generic preset.
Previously, Help Me Write only offered predefined editing options such as Polish, Formalize, and Shorten. While useful, those options provided limited flexibility. The latest update allows users to refine drafts with much greater precision.
Google has also added undo and redo buttons for AI-generated edits. This lets users quickly revert or restore changes while revising an email, making the writing process more flexible.
Who can access the feature?
According to Google, the feature is enabled by default for eligible users once it becomes available.
For Google Workspace organizations, administrators must enable both Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access. Individual users do not need to manually activate the feature after it is rolled out.
Google has started distributing the update to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. The company expects broader availability by July 20.
The feature will be available for several Workspace plans, including Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus, Frontline Plus, Google AI Pro for Education, AI Expanded Access customers, and Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers.
Why does this update matter?
Help Me Write is Google’s built-in AI writing assistant powered by Gemini. It can generate complete email drafts from simple prompts or improve existing messages.
With the addition of custom refinement prompts, Gmail moves beyond one-click editing and gives users direct control over how AI rewrites their emails. Instead of adapting to fixed templates, the AI can now respond to more detailed instructions, making email drafting more personalized and efficient.
As generative AI becomes a core part of productivity tools, Google’s latest Gmail update highlights a broader shift toward giving users greater control over AI-generated content rather than relying solely on automated suggestions.
