How Does the New Source Discovery Feature Work?
One of the biggest changes in this NotebookLM update is the ability to build a source repository directly from chat.
Previously, users had to upload documents, links, or other materials before NotebookLM could analyze information and generate insights. Now, users can begin with a simple project discussion. NotebookLM will then suggest relevant sources using its research capabilities and Google Search.
This could help users find primary sources in different languages, discover related research materials, or uncover content from authors connected to the topic. As a result, the process of starting a research project becomes more dynamic and less dependent on manual preparation.
What Else Is New?
Google has also introduced more advanced content generation tools.
Users can now provide detailed instructions to create outputs in different formats. Once generated, those outputs can be edited directly within the platform.
NotebookLM now supports exports across a wide range of formats. These include charts and visualizations, PDF documents, Word files, Markdown files, text documents, spreadsheets, JSON files, CSV files, Excel sheets, and PowerPoint presentations. The platform can also generate images using Google’s Nano Banana technology.
The update expands NotebookLM beyond research assistance and moves it closer to becoming an end-to-end content creation workspace.

Google introduced Deep Research last year to help users conduct structured online research. With this latest update, NotebookLM will show the steps it followed to arrive at an answer.

The new NotebookLM features are rolling out first to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google says broader availability is planned later.
