India is often seen playing catch-up in the AI race dominated by the US and China. But Ziroh Labs, a homegrown startup, might be changing that perception. With its new AI framework, Kompact AI, developed in collaboration with IIT Madras, Ziroh Labs is challenging the notion that advanced chips like Nvidia’s GPUs are essential for powerful AI applications.
This development arrives at a time when the global demand for GPUs far outweighs supply. Many Indian developers and researchers find themselves priced out of the AI revolution. Ziroh Labs offers an alternative. And it’s a big one.

Traditionally, large AI models rely heavily on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). These chips, like those from Nvidia, are fast but expensive and increasingly hard to get. That’s where Kompact AI comes in. It allows AI models to run effectively on regular CPUs—yes, the same ones found in personal computers and laptops.
At a recent demo event, Ziroh Labs showcased their framework running Meta’s Llama 2 and Alibaba’s Qwen2.5 on a standard laptop using an Intel Xeon processor. No GPUs, no cloud infrastructure, just local processing.
This innovation focuses on inference, the phase where an AI model is deployed and used. Ziroh Labs optimizes the models to reduce computational load, allowing them to work smoothly on lower-cost, widely available CPUs.
A Disruption Waiting to Happen
While others have dabbled in CPU-based AI inference, Ziroh Labs’ system stands out for its efficiency and ease of deployment. The startup claims the results are comparable to GPU-backed inference but without the steep costs.
Their technology has already been validated by major chipmakers like Intel and AMD. Tech veteran William Raduchel, who once served as chief strategy officer at Sun Microsystems, even called Kompact AI a potential market disruptor.
In simpler terms, Ziroh Labs could make powerful AI tools available to everyone, from startups and schools to smaller enterprises that don’t have deep pockets or fancy chips.
Tech for the Rest of Us
The significance of Ziroh Labs’ work is broader than just technical innovation. It speaks to something more global, a widening AI divide. As top AI capabilities become more concentrated in countries and companies with deep GPU resources, others are left behind.
V. Kamakoti, Director at IIT Madras, summed it up well: “We’re demonstrating that you don’t need a revolver to kill a mosquito.”
