Redmi A5 Comprises 120Hz Display, 32MP Camera
Xiaomi has introduced the Redmi A5 in India as part of its budget smartphone lineup. Priced at ₹6,499 for the 3GB RAM + 64GB storage model, the phone offers some surprising features for its price. The higher variant with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage is available for ₹7,499.
The Redmi A5 will go on sale starting tomorrow at 12 PM IST on Flipkart and Xiaomi India’s official website. It comes in three colour options—Jaisalmer Gold, Just Black, and Pondicherry Blue.
A Large Display with a High Refresh Rate
The Redmi A5 features a large 6.88-inch HD+ display, which is impressive for an entry-level phone. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring smoother scrolling and animations.
It also offers a 240Hz touch sampling rate, making the display more responsive during usage. While the HD+ resolution may feel underwhelming to some, the TÜV Rheinland certification ensures reduced eye strain during long use.
Decent Performance with Some Limitations
Powering the Redmi A5 is the Unisoc T7250 chipset, a budget-friendly octa-core processor. It handles everyday tasks like calls, messaging, browsing, and video watching quite well.
The 4GB RAM version comes with 128GB eMMC 5.1 storage, expandable up to 2TB via microSD. It also allows virtual RAM expansion up to 8GB.
However, the Unisoc T7250 is not ideal for gaming or intensive multitasking. Users looking for high-speed performance may find it slightly underpowered.
A Surprising Camera Setup
In a rare move for budget phones, Xiaomi has included a 32-megapixel main rear camera in the Redmi A5. While the second sensor hasn’t been specified, the main camera should offer above-average photos in daylight conditions.
For selfies and video calls, the phone has an 8-megapixel front camera, which performs reasonably well under good lighting.
But it’s worth noting that the camera software features are kept minimal. If you enjoy AI-based photo filters or night photography, you may find the camera experience basic.
Android 15 (Go Edition) Brings Clean Experience
The Redmi A5 runs on Android 15 (Go Edition), which is designed for entry-level devices. This version offers a lightweight and smooth experience, focusing on essential features.
It’s ideal for users who want a phone that does the basics without any clutter or heavy customisation.
Long Battery Life with Modest Charging Speed
Xiaomi has packed the phone with a 5,200mAh battery, which easily lasts more than a day with regular use.
However, it supports 15W wired charging, which is on the slower side compared to some competitors. You might need to wait a bit longer to juice it up completely.
Build and Other Features
The Redmi A5 comes with an IP52 rating, offering basic protection against dust and water splashes. It also features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and AI-based face unlock, adding extra convenience for daily use.
Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is still a must-have for many users in this price segment.
How It Compares Globally?
Interestingly, in Indonesia, the 4GB + 128GB model is priced at around ₹6,100, which is slightly lower than in India. This pricing difference might be due to local taxes and logistics.
Also, the Redmi A4’s 5G variant was launched earlier at ₹8,499 for a lower RAM configuration. It shows that Xiaomi is trying to balance features and price carefully in each market.
A Good Deal with a Few Compromises
The Redmi A5 stands out in the budget category with its high-refresh-rate display and 32MP camera. It offers a clean software experience and reliable battery life.
Still, the Unisoc chip and slow charging are trade-offs that users should consider. For first-time smartphone users or those who want a secondary device, it ticks most of the right boxes. But power users may want to explore slightly higher-priced options.
