WhatsApp to Add Per-Chat Storage Management for Android and iOS Users

WhatsApp Tests Per-Chat Storage Management Feature

WhatsApp is working on a new way to manage storage more efficiently. The messaging app is introducing a per-chat storage management feature for Android and iOS users. This update aims to help users delete media files from specific chats without leaving the conversation screen.

A New Way to Free Up Space

The feature, first spotted by WABetaInfo, is currently rolling out in beta. The latest WhatsApp Beta for iOS (version 25.31.10.70) adds an option to manage storage directly within the chat info screen. Android users have also started receiving the same update through the beta program.

Until now, WhatsApp users had to open the Manage Storage section in Settings to check large files and free up space. With this new shortcut, users can access the same tools directly from an individual chat, making cleanup much faster and easier.

How the Feature Works

Within the chat info screen, users will see a “Manage Storage” section displaying all shared photos, videos, and documents. These media files are neatly organized by file size. Users can sort them using filters such as “Newest,” “Oldest,” or “Largest.”

This layout mirrors the existing Manage Storage interface but adds more convenience. Users can now review, select, and delete media without switching between menus. The feature also allows bulk deletion of multiple files and supports marking selected items as “starred.”

Why It Matters

Over time, WhatsApp chats tend to fill up with high-resolution photos, long videos, and forwarded documents. This can quickly consume device storage, especially on phones with limited space. The new per-chat storage control makes it easier to identify and remove large files from specific contacts or groups, saving time and storage in one go.

This small but meaningful improvement shows WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to enhance user experience. By bringing storage management tools closer to the chat screen, the app helps users stay organized without breaking their flow.

Gradual Rollout for Beta Testers

For now, this feature is available to a limited number of beta testers. WhatsApp plans to expand access gradually after evaluating performance, stability, and user feedback. A wider rollout to all Android and iOS users is expected in the coming weeks once testing is complete.

The addition of per-chat storage management joins other recent WhatsApp updates focused on user control — including chat filters, locked conversations, and improved file sharing options.

As WhatsApp continues refining its core features, this update is another step toward making the app smarter, faster, and easier to manage.
