Threads Launches ‘Dear Algo’ AI Feature to Personalize Feed

Key Highlights:

  • Threads surpasses X in daily mobile usage, says Similarweb.
  • Users adjust content by posting public requests.
  • Feed changes last for three days.

Threads has introduced a new AI feature called “Dear Algo” that allows users to personalize their feed for three days. The feature works through public posts, letting users request more or less of specific content.

The update matters because Threads is positioning itself as a more real-time and adaptive social platform, especially as competition with X intensifies.

How does the ‘Dear Algo’ feature work?

To use the Threads feature, users must publish a public post starting with “Dear Algo.” They then specify what they want to see more or less of.

For example, a user can write: “Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts.”

Once posted, Threads adjusts that user’s feed for three days. After that period, the algorithm returns to its standard behavior unless another request is made.

However, there is a twist. Because requests are public, other users can see them. They can even repost the same request to apply it to their own feeds.

Why is personalization public?

Unlike private preference tools, Dear Algo works openly. This design may discourage users who prefer private controls.

Still, Meta says the public format helps users discover conversations and trending topics. In other words, personalization becomes visible and potentially viral.

Threads explained the idea in its blog post:

“Threads is where you go to keep up with what’s happening right now. But sometimes, what matters to you changes in an instant, and you want your Threads feed to reflect that — whether it’s seeing more posts during a live NBA game or less about a TV show you haven’t caught up on yet.”

Although Threads, X, and Bluesky already offer “Not Interested” options, this feature offers temporary and direct influence over the feed.

Threads vs X: Who leads in daily usage?

The launch comes weeks after market intelligence firm Similarweb reported that Threads surpassed X in daily mobile usage.

As of January 7, 2026, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active mobile users. X recorded 125 million daily active mobile users.

While X still leads on the web, Threads continues to grow on iOS and Android.

Currently, Dear Algo is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Threads plans to expand it further.

What’s next?

With Dear Algo, Threads is experimenting with real-time, user-driven feed control. The feature adds another layer to how users interact with the algorithm.

As Threads continues to evolve, this AI-based personalization model could influence how social platforms approach feed transparency and engagement.

For now, Threads users in select countries can test Dear Algo and see how three days of algorithm control reshape their feed.
