What is Copilot Mode in Edge?
Copilot Mode is Microsoft’s latest AI integration inside Edge. Once enabled, every new tab opens with a Copilot window that lets you chat, search, or browse seamlessly. Instead of juggling between tabs or apps, users can ask Copilot questions, look up information, or even summarize content from multiple tabs — all in one place.
The feature combines AI-powered answers, search results, and navigation tools into a single unified experience. It also uses context from all open tabs to provide better responses, making it a step ahead of traditional search browsing.
How to use Copilot Mode
You can turn on Copilot Mode by downloading or updating Microsoft Edge. Then, visit Microsoft’s website and toggle the Copilot switch. Once activated, your new tabs will automatically open in Copilot view.
For users in the US, Microsoft is also testing two preview features — Copilot Actions and Copilot Journeys. These options can be turned on from the same settings page for early access.
What Copilot Mode can do
Copilot Mode brings agentic AI features that go beyond answering questions. It can perform simple online actions like:
- Unsubscribing from unwanted marketing emails
- Booking a restaurant reservation
- Summarizing pages from open tabs
- Comparing products across different websites
However, Microsoft notes that these features are still in preview. Copilot will always show a warning before taking any real action, reminding users that it “can make mistakes.”
In early testing, Copilot successfully unsubscribed from emails but occasionally failed to complete more complex tasks, such as making accurate reservations or sending emails directly through Gmail.
Copilot Journeys: A new way to organize browsing
Another interesting addition is Copilot Journeys, an AI tool that automatically organizes your browsing history by topics. It helps you revisit ongoing research or projects more efficiently. For example, if you’ve been reading about AI tools or travel destinations, Journeys groups related pages together and suggests what to explore next.
This feature could be especially useful for students, professionals, or anyone managing multiple online searches daily.
A step toward AI-driven browsing
With Copilot Mode, Microsoft is clearly pushing Edge into the growing space of AI-powered browsers. By merging chat-based assistance, search, and automation, Edge becomes more than a browser — it’s turning into an intelligent companion for everyday tasks.
While the preview tools are not perfect yet, Microsoft’s focus on agentic AI signals where the company is headed: a web experience that does more for users, automatically.
