Google Translate gets smarter with new ‘Fast’ and ‘Advanced’ model options

Google Translate gets smarter with new model picker

Google Translate is getting an upgrade — one that makes its translations smarter and more adaptable. The app is introducing a model picker that lets users choose between ‘Fast’ and ‘Advanced’ translation modes, marking a subtle but important shift in how Google wants people to experience language translation.

Smarter control over translations

With the new update, Google is giving users a choice that balances speed and accuracy. Those who want quick results can go with ‘Fast’, while users who need deeper, more accurate translations can select ‘Advanced’.

The new picker appears right below the Translate logo in the app. It looks like a pill-shaped toggle, designed to fit Google’s growing family of AI-driven apps, including Gemini.

Accuracy powered by AI

Behind the scenes, Google Translate is already using Gemini models — the same technology that drives Google’s broader AI ecosystem. Earlier this year, Google credited Gemini for major improvements in translation quality, multimodal understanding, and text-to-speech output.

Now, the model picker gives users a glimpse into that AI foundation. It makes the experience more interactive, where you can choose what matters most — speed or precision.

iOS first, Android next

The smarter translation feature has started appearing on iOS devices, while Android users might see it in the coming weeks. Google hasn’t confirmed an official timeline yet.

The feature is currently focused on text translations and supports only select languages. However, this could expand over time as more languages and modes, like voice and camera translation, get Gemini-powered upgrades.

Free or part of Google AI Pro?

What’s still unclear is whether the ‘Advanced’ mode will remain free. Google hasn’t added any subscription prompts yet, but similar model pickers in other Google apps have been tied to Google AI Pro, a paid tier.

If that happens, Translate could soon follow the same model — offering free quick translations and premium AI precision under its subscription layer.

Translate keeps evolving

Google has been consistently updating its Translate app, especially for iOS users. Recent additions include Control Center widgets for Camera, Text, Dictation, and Conversation modes — giving instant access to translation tools.

The new AI-based model picker adds to this growing list, showing how Google is turning Translate into a smarter, more personalized assistant rather than just a dictionary for global travelers.
