Claude Can Now Talk: Anthropic Brings Voice to Its Chatbot
Anthropic has launched a new voice mode for its Claude chatbot, starting with users of its mobile app. The feature is now in beta and will roll out in English over the next few weeks. With this, Claude will not just understand your voice but also talk back to you in real time.
What Is Claude’s Voice Mode?
The voice mode lets users have full spoken conversations with Claude using the mobile app. This means you can now ask questions out loud and hear Claude’s answers in a natural voice. It’s especially useful when your hands are busy but you still want help from an AI.
By default, voice mode uses Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model, known for being fast and capable. You don’t need to type — just speak and listen. After the conversation, Claude shows key points on screen, along with a transcript and a summary.
Who Can Use This Feature?
Right now, this new voice feature is for users of the Claude app. It’s still in testing, so it may not be available to everyone just yet. Some users have already reported getting early access.
Free users will be able to try voice mode with some limits. Most will get around 20 to 30 conversations. Paid users, however, get more power. For example, they can connect Claude to Google Calendar and Gmail using a Google Workspace connector. But if you want Claude to read your Google Docs, you’ll need the Claude Enterprise plan.
What Else Can It Do?
Claude’s voice mode goes beyond just chatting. You can use it to talk about documents or images. You can also switch from voice to text easily during a conversation. Claude offers five different voice styles, so you can choose the one that sounds best to you.
This makes Claude feel more human and helps people use it in different situations — like while cooking, driving, or walking.
How Does It Compare to Other AI Assistants?
Claude now joins other big AI names with voice features. OpenAI offers voice chat in ChatGPT. Google has Gemini Live, and Elon Musk’s xAI platform has voice mode for Grok. These tools aim to make talking to AI feel as natural as talking to a person.
Anthropic is taking the same path with Claude. The idea is simple — let users interact without typing. Voice makes things faster, more human, and easier for people of all ages.
What’s Coming Next?
Earlier this year, Anthropic’s CPO Mike Krieger shared that they were working on voice features. He also confirmed that talks were ongoing with Amazon and voice tech company ElevenLabs. While it’s unclear which partnerships led to this release, the feature itself is now live and expanding.
We might see even more updates soon. Since Claude already works well with documents and emails, it’s likely that Anthropic will keep building smart features around voice in the coming months.
