What is Vibes AI Video App that Meta is Testing?

Key Highlights:

  • Meta plans freemium access and paid subscriptions for advanced AI features.
  • Meta is testing a stand-alone app for its AI-generated Vibes videos.
  • Vibes was earlier available only inside the Meta AI app.
  • The move positions Meta as a direct rival to OpenAI’s Sora video app.

Meta is testing a stand-alone app for Vibes, its AI-generated short video feature. The app was earlier available only inside Meta AI.

What is Vibes app?

Vibes is a short-form video experience built entirely around AI-generated content. Launched last September, it allows users to create videos from prompts or remix existing AI videos. Every video in the feed is AI-generated. There is no traditional camera-first content.

Until now, Vibes lived inside the Meta AI app. Users had to open Meta AI to create, view, or share these videos. That is changing.

Why a separate app?

According to the company, early usage inside Meta AI showed strong traction. By launching a dedicated app, it wants to offer a more focused and immersive experience for AI video creation and discovery.

In a statement shared with TechCrunch, the company said users are increasingly creating and sharing AI videos with friends. A stand-alone app makes that behavior easier and more social.

The move also makes Vibes a clearer competitor to OpenAI’s Sora, which launched its own AI-generated video and social experience shortly after Vibes.

The development was first reported by Platformer.

How does the Vibes app work?

Vibes lets users generate videos from scratch or remix videos from their feed. Before publishing, users can add visuals, layer music, and tweak styles. Videos can be posted to the Vibes feed, shared via direct messages, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

Meta says sharing behavior on Vibes mirrors how people already use Reels, with many videos being sent directly to friends.

Will Vibes remain free?

Not entirely. The company has confirmed plans to test subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. While basic video creation will remain free, users may need to subscribe for additional video generation limits each month.

These subscription tests are expected to roll out in the coming months, alongside other AI monetization experiments across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
