Google has announced Nano Banana 2, the latest version of its image generation model. The new system is technically called Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. It is now the default image model inside the Gemini app.
The new model replaces earlier image models across Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes in Gemini. Google is also rolling it out across Search, Google Lens, and its creative tools. The update focuses on faster image generation without losing visual quality.
What exactly is Nano Banana 2
Nano Banana 2 is Google’s next-generation image generation model designed for speed and realism. It builds on the earlier Nano Banana models introduced in 2025. While Nano Banana Pro focused on maximum quality, this version aims to deliver strong fidelity at much faster speeds.
Google says the model can generate images from 512 pixels up to full 4K resolution. It also supports multiple aspect ratios, making it suitable for social posts, presentations, videos, and search results.
How model evolved inside Gemini
Google first introduced Nano Banana in August 2025. The model quickly gained traction. Millions of images were generated inside the Gemini app, especially in markets like India.
In November 2025, Google released Nano Banana Pro. That version allowed more detailed textures, lighting, and complex compositions. However, it required more processing time.

Availability

On paid plans such as Google AI Pro and Ultra, users can still access Nano Banana Pro. They can regenerate images using the three-dot menu when higher fidelity is required.

Google is also opening Nano Banana 2 to developers. The model is available in preview through the Gemini API, Gemini CLI, and Vertex AI.
Developers can also access it via AI Studio and Antigravity, Google’s experimental development tool released in November. This makes Nano Banana 2 usable for apps, creative pipelines, and automated workflows.
How Google is handling AI image transparency
Every image generated using Nano Banana 2 includes a SynthID watermark. This watermark identifies content as AI-generated while remaining invisible to the human eye.
The images also support C2PA Content Credentials. This system is backed by an industry group that includes Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta.
Google says SynthID verification has been used over 20 million times since its launch in the Gemini app in November. This signals growing interest in AI content authenticity.
